How is the Curl Score calculated?

We read 6 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. Sources and method

Mostly positive

Loved and long-lasting. Pricey.

Concentrated, long-lasting stylers that many call their holy grail, with a minority reporting scalp irritation.

The full verdict

Most reviewers like the brand, and many are loyal for years, saying the products are concentrated enough that a bottle lasts close to a year. The I Create Volume gel and the two foams are praised for light, touchable definition, especially on fine hair, while I Create Hold and Curl Memory give stronger, multi-day hold but turn crunchy, sticky or matted if overdone. The Sweet Spirit leave-in is a favourite. The complaints that recur are price, conditioners with little slip for some, herbal scents a few dislike, and a handful of reviewers who had scalp irritation or shedding.

More promising for
Fine to medium curls that want light, lasting definition, and anyone who values clean ingredients and refills.
Think twice if
Your scalp is easily irritated, you're on a tight budget, or you want a hold you can't overdo.

Their I Create Volume is the only styling product I use now! I originally balked at the price, but one 10oz bottle lasted me almost a full year. It’s super lightweight and improves definition without a crunch. I didn’t think I’d be able to get day 2-3 hair with something so lightweight but I can and do! Big fan.

Ooh, I just bought my second bottle of I Create Curl Memory because it has been the only gel (or any hold product) that has given me definition that lasts through multiple days without much frizz. But I hesitated a bit because while I love the look I don’t love the feel. The crunch can be too much for me and I can’t scrunch it out. Now you have me wondering if I should try I Create Volume instead! Can you compare the two any more for me?

I had a similar experience! I started using the shampoo, conditioner, mousse and gel per the instruction of a curly hair stylist. Within a week, I had scalp irritation and my hair started falling out!!! It stopped within days of switching back to my crappy drug store products. I thought I was crazy since I’d heard so many great things about it! I also couldn’t get past the really strong patchouli smell in the mousse. I switched to Amika mousse and Ouidad gel and love that combo. And my hair isn’t falling out anymore lol

This is my holy grail brand. It is pricey but the products last forever for me. I have fine 2c/3a curls. I create volume is my number one. It’s so much like Curl Keeper- a thin serum like gel that creates definition without stickiness or stiffness. I use that with the I create lift foam mousse. Together they provide the perfect amount of touchable definition for me. I love their hydrating hair bath and conditioner. You need a lot of water to get the slip from the conditioner. It’s so concentrated you just need a small amount of product. Their sweet spirit leave in spray has such an amazing smell and it is the perfect refresher for me. Leaves my hair soft and smelling incredible. The I create hold is very stiff hold. I prefer a lighter feel but it does really work if you want to lock your curls down. I tried the quiet calm curl control and it’s too heavy for me and doesn’t really do much of anything. The detox hair mask didn’t do much either.

I Create Definition has been the missing key in keeping my fine 2C curls actually holding their shape for three days. Yes my hair looks like ramen after drying but after SOTC, the definition and hold is great. It's also pretty concentrated and one regular size bottle lasted nearly a year of using 3-4 pumps every 3-4 days.

I have been using this brand for a couple of years now. Here are my thoughts… Overall, my hair is much better shape now than it was before I started using any product in this brand. So I’m very happy with that. However, I do probably do things slightly different than other people. I have low porosity medium two thick density hair that is 3B to 3C. My hair hates products that are Shea butter based or have a lot of protein (I do realize that this brand uses those ingredients, but they are much further down on the ingredient list and my hair seems to be able to tolerate that ). My hair also hates curl creams—pretty much all curl creams, including curl creams from this brand. I also change up my product combination, depending on the time of year due to cold weather and dry air versus hot, humid weather and a lot of moisture in the air. I absolutely love, sweet spirit leave in conditioner. It has been the only conditioner it has not weighed down my hair. I have tried probably 30 or 40 different ones and this like I said is the only one that my Hair likes. I use I create volume as a filler after sweet Spirit. Then I do I create hold and top it off with I create Lyft volumizing foam. That’s my summer routine. These products make it so my hair last 4 to 5 days with minimal frizz because it does not allow my hair to absorb the moisture from the air (I can go seven days if I choose to as well). In the winter, I change it up to. I create curl memory, followed by the Lyft foam. I do this because in the winter where I am it is extremely dry and I do need something with a humectant in it to draw in some moisture. The only product I have not figured out how to use properly on my hair is I create definition foam. No matter how I pair it my hair literally flash dries. No matter what oil I use or whether I use oil or not, I cannot scrunch out the crunch because my hair literally breaks. This happens whether I use something underneath it or just use that foam. Once a week I shampoo with their color, awakening hair bath, and color radiance conditioner. The other wash day I actually use a clarifying shampoo— Malibu C undo goo. And follow that with the color awakening hair bath. I deep condition and do a repair treatment both from Innersense. That I’ve been extremely happy with. My routine has also allowed me to go a full week between wash days sometimes. That depends honestly on my activity for the week and how my hair is feeling on my scalp. So I would say I go a full seven days probably once a month other than that, I split it and do two days a week. Overall, this is the only brand where I’ve had success over multiple products. I have attempted pairing products from different brands with this brand in the past and I was never crazy about the end results. Yes it is pricey, but the products tend to last in exceedingly long time for me so, I feel like I’m actually spending about as much or less as I was prior when I was switching up products on a regular basis.

Also fine haired and same! My hair has changed a lot recently, diffuse hair loss + became finer and less curly, though the less curly may be a result of it becoming more fine. And innersense mousse + gel and diffusing is the only thing that makes my hair look similar to how it used to. The style actually holds for days and it looks awesome. Given, day 1 it looks strangely wet despite SOTC but it's worth it for the longevity I get after and days 2 through 4 look especially great

The biggest thing with Innersense products is that they’re very concentrated. You have to add loads of water to get the seaweed/slippy feel but lord it’s so worth it. I’ve been using color radiance shampoo & conditioner, hydrating cream hairbath, I create hold & I create volume for a decade now. I have high density, fine 3c/4a curls. Start with a small amount then if your hair feels dry add warm water, repeat process until you get the feel of seaweed. The only product I’ve tried and can’t get to work for my hair is I create curl memory. My hair looks amazing but after a few days it gets so matted and I think something in it mildly irritates my scalp.

I also use the color conditioner and don’t color my hair and the slip it provides is different than what I know works, it like… doesn’t feel slippy enough? Sorta leaves me skeptical, until…I switch to a more slippy conditioner, and I immediately switch back to innersense. With innersense I use way less conditioner than any other brand, no matter how tangled my hair is, and my hair ends up more moisturized and less heavy.

Warning: I’m obsessed with this brand. The following paragraphs will probably sound like a very wordy ad. It’s not; I’m just passionate. I was a DevaCurl Girl back in the day, but their reformulation turned my curls into limp noodles, which started the Great Product Hunt. I tried a ton of brands (BounceCurl, Ouidad, AG, Curlsmith) but Innersense was the first one to make my curls look, feel and smell like I wanted. I have been loyal to this brand for years and have updated my routine a few times to incorporate new products. It’s not a cheap product line for sure, but I’ve found the products to be very concentrated and last far longer than you’d expect. My hair is primarily 3B curls that are low porosity and fine. However, I’ve been going gray since I was about 15 (thanks genetics) and have large chunks of white hair that is more slightly more coarse mixed in. I tend keep washing and wet-refreshing to a minimum since the combo of two different low porosity textures makes the process of getting my hair wet and then dry again take forever and provide uneven results. Here is my Great Big Routine that I do once a week (maybe twice if it’s absolutely necessary): First wash with Color Awakening Hairbath Second wash with Bright Balance Hairbath Bright Balance Conditioner Layer Sweet Spirit Leave In and Quiet Calm Curl Control (different parts of my hair need different moisture levels) Apply liberal amounts of I Create Curl Memory Brush in sections with the Slick-Dense Define Edgelift BounceCurl brush Scrunch in I Create Lift Squeeze out all of extra water I can Spray on KMS Therma Shape Quick Blow Dry Spray (one of my rare non-Innersense products and necessary to get my hair dry in under an hour) Diffuse until it’s fully dry or I’m sweating too much to keep going Since switching to Innersense, I don’t think I’ve gone a full week of my life without getting an unsolicited compliment on my hair. Yes, I put in the time and effort to get it there, but I do give the products a lot of the credit.

LOVE this brand! I switched my shampoo and conditioner from Shea to Innersense a couple of years ago and my hair has never been happier. I can’t believe some days how soft and lightweight it feels, and frizz is pretty much non existent now. I also use their Quiet Calm Curl Control. My hair guy puts I Create Volume in my hair when he does it, and I’m looking to start experimenting with that next. He said it’s his holy grail. The price put me off at first, but the shampoo and conditioner at least last forever. A little bit goes a long way. Im spending less on it than I did on Shea.

Their shampoo changed my life. I chopped off a lot of my hair a while back (like bob length) and my normally frizzy curls became super greasy, since the oil from my scalp has much less distance to travel. All of a sudden all my “hydration” and “moisture” products just made everything so much worse. I switched to the CeraVe shampoo for oily scalp once a week and use the Innersense shampoo almost more like a conditioner every 2 days or so and my hair is like a movie star’s when I wake up every morning. I sleep with it just crazy and loose and wet on a satin pillow and when I wake up I blow dry it for 5 minutes to get a smoother curl and you’d think I paid hundreds of dollars for a vintage updo. Idk what it is about this shampoo but it’s straight up alchemy

I have tried multiple products and I liked the hydrating cream hairbath + conditioner a lot, I do find them to be a bit pricey for shampoo and conditioner, as I go through those much faster than through stylers, where price matters less for me. The stylers have been a bit mweh for me, I haven’t tried everything, but quite a few and none have become repurchases.

I love how this particular brand is so versatile for all sorts of different people. I didn’t include this, but I do actually have to do a two shampoos on one of my wash days where one is slightly more cleansing than the inner sense shampoo I use. If I don’t do that, I don’t feel like my hair is 100% clean. I do like the end result with the second shampoo though.

Expensive but works. I don’t like that it’s a bit of greenwashing in their marketing : I create hold uses a polymer to create….well, hold. But it’s not going anywhere. Stiiiicky especially if your hair isn’t wet enough but your hair will look the same by day 7. The hydrating hair bath (shampoo) is excellent, the conditioner and mask didn’t impress my Black hair. Quiet curl control provides not-so-impressive moisture or definition on its own but it’s okay with I create Hold. The mask is okay. I love that they do huge bottles though and that a little goes a long way.

I have a love hate relationship with this brand. Hate the shampoo and conditioners, hate the herbal smells, hate the marketing mantras on the bottles. I was gifted my initial trial products otherwise I never would have touched them. That said… LOVE the way the stylers perform. Create Hold and Curl Memory are pretty heavy duty hold products and not to be applied with reckless abandon. Very sticky and crunchy if overdone, where Quiet Calm CC will leave you feeling waxy if you use too much. I am usually an evening airdry person, but if I mist with water and diffuse the following morning, I get 4 good looking hair days, with almost every styler combo I’ve tried.

My 3c/3b dense, fine curls love, love, love the I Create Lift Foam, I Create Definition Foam and the Sweet Spirit Leave In. The voluminizing foam is a staple in my permanent routine to create enough lift at the roots since mine tend to lay flat even with upside down styling.
