How is the Curl Score calculated?
We read 7 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. Sources and method
The verdict
A long-time holy grail for frizz in humid weather, though a sizeable minority get no cast, no hold or a sticky finish.
The full verdict
Reviewers describe it as their ride or die for 10, 15 and even 30 years, and the one curl product they'd keep. Fans praise frizz control in heat and humidity, juicy, shiny clumps and curls that last four or five days, and say a little goes a long way on soaking wet hair. Reviewers talk about two versions: the original blue-label gel, softer and less sticky, and the stronger-hold red-label Advanced gel, which some prefer for its cast. The doubters are consistent too. Several got no cast and frizz within hours in very humid climates, others found it sticky, dense or crunchy without taming frizz, and a few say it's overpriced, though many buy it cheaply at TJ Maxx.
- Best for
- Curls that frizz in heat and humidity and want soft, lasting hold
- Skip it if
- You want a hard cast from the original, or your hair turns sticky with heavy gels

I keep coming back to it; flexible hold. I apply it generously with less leave-in, brush through, micro-plop, then add mousse and scrunch before diffusing.

I don't like the stronger-hold gel much.
Shortish 3a, getting grays

I want to like it, but I get no cast and it doesn't control frizz after a few hours (I apply it on wet, not dripping, hair).

I've used it forever and always come back to it; I mix it in my palm with the Moisture Lock leave-in, which works for long and short hair.

A big fan of both; mixing the two is the best combination so far for my hair.

My all-time favourite; about $16 for 16oz on sale. I like it slightly more than LA Looks.

Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel. [and] Yep, same - I keep trying other things but always come back to this! [and] If you're putting in a leave-in before it I would use less of the leaves in. Then I put the gel in generously, then brush it through, then usually micro plop a little, then put some mousse in, scrunch a lot, before diffusing. [and] Yes, it is [a flexible hold].

I've tried most of the big brands and always come back to ouidad. Their heat and humidity gel and their leave in conditioner (one in the white and blue bottle) has been my jam for 15 years. I don't like the stronger hold gel much but that's just my hair. Shortish (well medium for a guy) 3a hair. Getting some grays so it does its thing Their shampoos and conditioners are also good but I actually don't think those are nearly as important as what you put in after washing. Also, bonus points for not smelling like shea butter or strawberry or anything strong. It has a neutral scent and as a guy that's what I want.

I want to like this product so much! I've heard others say it's a strong hold, but I get no cast from it and it doesn't control the frizz after a few hours. What's the best way to apply it? I'm putting it on wet, but not dripping.

This. Been using it forever and whenever I try something else I just come right back to this. [and] I actually just mix it with their moisture lock leave in conditioner and it's works amazing when I've had long and short hair. [and] I literally just mix it in my palm. Much faster and actually works better than doing it separately. I do a bit more gel than conditioner.

I like LA looks extreme sport gel a lot. Under $3 for a 20 oz bottle. My all time favorite is ouidad advanced climate control. I get it on sale for about $16 for a 16oz. I like the ouidad a little more, but the LA looks is so cheap and works almost as well, so I buy both and alternate depending on mood.

My ride or die in a hot, humid climate: juicy, silky clumps and great frizz control. Worth every penny.

I've been waiting for this one! I love the heat and humidity gel. The original, not the “stronger hold” version. Of all the products I've ever tried, this continues to be my ride or die. I have 2c fine curls/waves and live in a very hot, humid climate. I use it with the Bounce Curl Define brush, and it creates the most juicy, silky clumps. I usually top it with the Curlsmith bouncy strength volume foam for a bit more hold, but the gel does the heavy lifting, especially for frizz. It's worth every penny and I will continue to purchase it forever (p.s., it smells divine)

It does not create a hard cast on its own! But I find that even without a hard cast, the curls stay clumped, shiny, and bouncy for the most part. They do expand/separate a little over the course of a few days, and this is also with intense exercise in-between, but I don't think it looks bad and I lean into the “voluminous” look until it's time to wash. I found that the stronger hold gel clumped very well and absolutely left a harder cast than the original, but then left my hair feeling sticky after breaking the cast, even when adjusted for less

Absolutely love the Advanced Climate Control line. I live in Texas and I had just finally figured out the products that worked best for me (during the winter), and then summer hit with that Texas humidity, and suddenly my products were not working the same, with way more frizz than normal. I ordered the sample set that includes the defrizzing shampoo and conditioner, the heat and humidity gel, and the refresh spray. I loved all of them, although I can do without the refresh spray, plain water works just fine. But the defrizzing shampoo and conditioner, and the heat and humidity strong hold gel have become my go-to products. If I had to choose only one to take with me, it would definitely be the gel. I get a great cast that leaves my hair feeling touchably soft when it's scrunched out, and when I refresh with plain water the cast reforms, which helps my curls last for 2 or 3 days. I have tried the fearherlight foam - it takes a LOT for it to work and then then it's not as good as the gel, for me. Maybe in the winter it will perform better. When I've tried it layered under the gel, it gave me noticeable better volume but I wasn't crazy about the way my hair felt, like just too much product. I also have the featherlight styling cream, it's too heavy for my hair, even when I use the smallest amount, it seems to weigh down my curls, making them looser. I regularly use the Advanced Climate Control leave in spray, and it's okay but not as good as the leave in I was using before, Matrix A Curl Can Dream scrunch n go spray - I just love the way my hair feels when I use it, I can feel and see the difference in the shine. If you have a TJ Maxx or Marshall's near you, you can often find this brands products at a pretty good discount. I bought the big bottles that are normally $70 for $25-30.

I used to use this by itself and had good results. You don’t need a lot of this product, it’s really easy to overdo it and that could be why it made your hair sticky. I recommend putting it in your hair before you get out of the shower, while your hair is soaking wet, use a much smaller amount of product than you think you need, and use a wide tooth comb to comb it through. Sometimes if I felt like I used a bit too much I would just stick my head under the faucet for a sec and comb it through again

Agreed. It's the only gel that has ever given me a cast (my hair eats gels - even the ones people say give them amazing casts), which I need where I live. If I don't have a cast, I'll lose all definition in a day or two. I've tried many gels over the years, and this is the first one I've been loyal to since I finally caved in and bought it. And even with this gel, I sometimes have to top it off with hairspray because of how my hair behaves and the weather where I am!

I just switched to the Advanced Climate Control Gel (red label) after a decade with LA Looks blue and am shocked at how well it performs despite being so runny. No cast (starting to think my hair is incapable of holding a cast), but visibly better definition and shine, and my curls are less poufy when they do eventually fluff up after a day. Second day hair holds a curl better, too, even if I brush it out. Using Kinky Curly Knot Today and Kerastase Ciment Thermique as my only other products. Obviously didn’t want to love it because it’s pricey but LA Looks and I saved a bunch of money over the years, so 😂 2c/3a fine, low porosity, shoulder-to-bra strap-length hair

The curly salons near me all push the Ouidad products, so I feel like I should enjoy them, but I don’t. I think my curls are somewhere in the 3b range. The climate control gel and the Curl Quencher Cream are decent, but I just never get good enough results to justify the price. I recently tried the Moisture Lock Leave In Conditioner, and the smell was terrible. It was a strong, lemony chemical smell with something funky behind it. It smelled like a port-a-potty with an air freshener in it. I’ll also say that the Ouidad salons that I’ve been to all seem to rely on the method of sectioning the hair, applying gobs of 3-4 different styling products, finger coiling throughout every section, and then taking forever to blow-dry on low. I prefer less of that sticky/shiny ultra definition, and more of a natural curl with volume. I lightly swipe/scrunch a medium hold curl lotion onto wet hair, sometimes top with a gel or mousse, and then dry. Lately, CurlSmith is my preferred brand, especially because I often find it on sale.

ME TOO! It did NOTHING for me, just left a sticky mess that never hardened into a cast. I think it may be because I air dried though, and in the humid air it never solidifies! Maybe it would be better if I diffused

I'm with you. It is useless on my hair. I didn't get a full day out of it before the frizz turned into a halo turned into a poodle struck by lightening. I know there is a huge cult following for it, but my curls just didn't want any part of it. Back to my Curls Rock Amplifier - my HG for nearly 20 years.

My hair is very fine, frizzy, low porosity 2b/3a, and in theory, the heat and humidity gel should be perfect for me, but neither version works for me. I love the consistency of the stronger hold gel and the scent, and they have sales fairly often, but it gives no cast and has zero hold for me.

I have very fine hair that springs up in humidity and loves protein and moisture. The anti-climate gel lasts all of 2 hours in medium humidity, forget high humidity! Maybe it will work well in winter. The moisture lock curl butter- I’ve used it twice, and it’s taken my curls from 2b, maybe 2c to easily 3a. It provides a good amount of moisture and definition without weighing my hair down. This is the product of my dreams. I layered just this under the AG styling lotion with amazing results. The moisture lock extreme hold gel- this gel doesn’t have extreme hold for me, but provides moisture with decent hold. I haven’t tried it on its own, but I enjoy the texture on my hair. And, it’s fine to just throw on second day hair to refresh, doesn’t look/feel producty. The moisture lock leave in- this would be my hg one and done product because it provides moisture, hold, and prevents frizz for me, but it makes my scalp burn. I’m hoping to get some use out of it when my hair is longer. Because it has silicone, I know it will dry my hair out in the long term, but it’s such a great formula. Mongongo oil- lightweight oil that reduces frizz and doesn’t look oily on my fine hair. I’ve only recently tried their products, and every but the anti-climate gels have been a hit for me.

I like Ouidad! The Curl Shaper shampoo is my go to! The Advanced Climate Control gel was awful for me though. My hair is protein sensitive, so it turned into a hot mess. The Curl Quencher gel works well for me but isn’t a stand out among other gels I’ve tried.

I had to go fragrance free so tried and like Ouidad’s shampoo/conditioner. I have very fine and thinning 3b-ish hair that generally likes protein. So someone else’s mileage may vary. I tried the Climate control gel but just got frizz and no hold, curl formation, clumping, etc. No idea why. Haven’t tried the Advanced/extra hold version as can’t use fragranced products. This is another product that is so popular and widely sold I don’t understand why they can’t make a fragrance free version of it/the advanced one? Not to mention their other most popular products. They would surely sell — there’s a huge population of people who need ff and Ouidad is big enough to handle the initial costs…

Although I love the Ouidad Climate Control gel I do find that the shampoo and conditioner are a bit too moisturising for me. You could try it again with a stronger shampoo, the flora & curl leave in as a rinse out, and then going straight to gel, and see if you get that cast.

I use it mixed with LA Extreme Sport gel; my hair needs a ton of gel. No cast when I diffuse from soaking wet.

I use that same Ouidad gel, but I mix LA Extreme Sport gel with it in my hand and apply them both. My hair also needs a ton of gel. Also, I don't get a cast because I diffuse from soaking wet/how wet it is after applying styling products. But I used to air dry with the LA gel and got a cast with that.

I love it: great hold that lasts at least 5 days with generous amounts, and no scrunching out the crunch.

I love the Ouidad gel. The red bottle. My hair is just past my shoulders high porosity coarse texture. 3a 3b. I wrap my hair in an old t shirt out of the shower for about 3 minutes while I moisturize my whole body. When I take the t shirt off my hair is damp. I rewet a little. I apply generous amounts of gel with praying hands then scrunch. I air dry only. When about half way dry I glaze a small amount of gel over my hair. I never scrunch out the crunch I pineapple my hair and go to sleep. I wake up with slightly less crunch, but great hold. This lasts me at least 5 days. I found (for me) using too many products contributed to frizz. I clarify every 3 washes. I always double wash and use conditioner.

i was just coming to say this about too many products. i have a similar curl type and that's been my experience, too. i actually just tried this ouidad gel for the first time bc of this group. the cast was almost too much for what i like! my routine: wash with hairstory. mixed chicks kids curly conditioner and fully rinsed. i applied the gel to dripping wet hair in the shower, squeezed out as much as i could with my bare hands, then diffused intermittently (lol, i have kids) on medium heat. i slept with my hair in a silk wrap. in the morning, it was hard to fully scrunch the crunch! i used my diffused to help break the cast.

I never get a cast or hold with it in my very humid sea-level climate. Update: damp styling with more cream and gel, plus combing, gives some areas of cast.

Original: My current routine: I clarify with kinky curly come clean I regular shampoo with Ouidad heat and humidity When styling I use a leave in as a rinse out (right now using up some Flora Curl), when I'm just tying back I use the Ouidad conditioner I damp style (not dripping but shortly after) with a little Ouidad leave in and then the red label heat and humidity gel. I never ever get a cast. [...] Update: I also suspect that using a protein treatment has helped somewhat, I think my hair was over moisturized and was recommended to use the curlsmith protein mask which I've done a few times. My hair seems to hold definition much better these days than before.

Not suited to crazy humidity, because glycerin is the 2nd ingredient, so it won't prevent frizz; use far more of it, or layer it.

It's harder to get a cast in high humidity or if your water has a lot of calcium. But the gel you're using— despite the label— isn't something I'd use for the kind of crazy humidity I had when I lived in the American South. With glycerin as the 2nd ingredient, it's never going to prevent frizz in super high humidity, no matter how much you use. But I will note that all signs from your description point to not using nearly enough gel. Try doubling or tripling the amount you use and see if you get a cast. But on glycerin— in humidity you should only use either glycerin-free gels or ones with glycerin at the 5th ingredient or less as a ballpark. Gels I love in high humidity: -LA Looks Blue or Yellow -Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (I like level 3, but level 5 will give you a hard cast) -Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Flash Freeze level 5 -Jessicurl Spiralicious -Jessicurl Confident Coils -Treluxe Hi Definition -Curl Smith Fragrance Free Shine Gel (level 9) -Beyond the Zone Bada Bing Gel Finally, I will note that while in ultra high humidity, my hair does best with layers of products. For example, layer a bit of a more humectant gel like your climate control one or Kinky Curly Curling Custard, Treluxe Re-Flex, Uncle Funky's, or Curlsmith Souffle under a light hard hold gel like Jessicurl Confident Coils or Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. But I think my best ever humidity hack is layering Giovanni Air Turbo-Charged Mousse OVER my gel. It's glycerin-free and hard hold. It isn't quite enough on its own, but layered over any gel, it blocks humidity and keeps my hair bouncy while adding a crunchy cast. Maybe start with layering that over your Ouidad.

That's kinda crazy because I've tried this same process and never get a cast like that. Like at most I use a shampoo, a conditioner, a leave in, and a gel. And I used to skip the leave in and use just gel. Red label Ouidad. I'd apply a ton and just leave it, thinking the same thing that if I slept with it in the cast it would survive the night better. I ended up with severe helmet hair. I get better results if I do use a bit of leave in. Every stylist I've been to also uses one. Also every time I've tried the pineapple my hair either falls out or the scrunchie ruins the curl underneath it :( same issue with bonnet, helmet hair. So I just use a satin pillowcase and get no sleep because I'm consciously trying not to roll around
