How is the Curl Score calculated?
We read 7 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. Sources and method
Mostly positive
A cult gel. Not for everyone.
The Climate Control gel is a long-time holy grail for many, but it gives no cast or hold for others.
The full verdict
Nearly everything reviewers say about Ouidad comes back to the Climate Control gel. Its fans have used it for 10, 15, even 30 years, and praise its frizz control in heat and humidity and curls that last for days. A sizeable minority can't get it to work: no cast, frizz within hours in humid weather, or a sticky, heavy finish. Beyond the gel, the shampoos and leave-ins are liked but rarely called life-changing, and several reviewers find the scents too strong. Price comes up often, though many buy it cheaply at TJ Maxx or Marshalls.
- More promising for
- Curls that frizz in heat and humidity, and anyone who wants soft, touchable hold that lasts for days.
- Think twice if
- You want a hard cast or very strong hold, your hair is fine and builds up easily, or you're sensitive to strong scents.

I've been waiting for this one! I love the heat and humidity gel. The original, not the “stronger hold” version. Of all the products I've ever tried, this continues to be my ride or die. I have 2c fine curls/waves and live in a very hot, humid climate. I use it with the Bounce Curl Define brush, and it creates the most juicy, silky clumps. I usually top it with the Curlsmith bouncy strength volume foam for a bit more hold, but the gel does the heavy lifting, especially for frizz. It's worth every penny and I will continue to purchase it forever (p.s., it smells divine)

I had to throw away that leave in because the smell was so terrible. It was like stale old lady perfume. That and the botanical boost spray 🤢 I like Ouidad products but they tend to build up quickly in my fine hair. And they are all strongly scented. Smell before you buy! The Vital Curls line smells in the best, imo.

ME TOO! It did NOTHING for me, just left a sticky mess that never hardened into a cast. I think it may be because I air dried though, and in the humid air it never solidifies! Maybe it would be better if I diffused

Absolutely love the Advanced Climate Control line. I live in Texas and I had just finally figured out the products that worked best for me (during the winter), and then summer hit with that Texas humidity, and suddenly my products were not working the same, with way more frizz than normal. I ordered the sample set that includes the defrizzing shampoo and conditioner, the heat and humidity gel, and the refresh spray. I loved all of them, although I can do without the refresh spray, plain water works just fine. But the defrizzing shampoo and conditioner, and the heat and humidity strong hold gel have become my go-to products. If I had to choose only one to take with me, it would definitely be the gel. I get a great cast that leaves my hair feeling touchably soft when it's scrunched out, and when I refresh with plain water the cast reforms, which helps my curls last for 2 or 3 days. I have tried the fearherlight foam - it takes a LOT for it to work and then then it's not as good as the gel, for me. Maybe in the winter it will perform better. When I've tried it layered under the gel, it gave me noticeable better volume but I wasn't crazy about the way my hair felt, like just too much product. I also have the featherlight styling cream, it's too heavy for my hair, even when I use the smallest amount, it seems to weigh down my curls, making them looser. I regularly use the Advanced Climate Control leave in spray, and it's okay but not as good as the leave in I was using before, Matrix A Curl Can Dream scrunch n go spray - I just love the way my hair feels when I use it, I can feel and see the difference in the shine. If you have a TJ Maxx or Marshall's near you, you can often find this brands products at a pretty good discount. I bought the big bottles that are normally $70 for $25-30.

I have very fine hair that springs up in humidity and loves protein and moisture. The anti-climate gel lasts all of 2 hours in medium humidity, forget high humidity! Maybe it will work well in winter. The moisture lock curl butter- I’ve used it twice, and it’s taken my curls from 2b, maybe 2c to easily 3a. It provides a good amount of moisture and definition without weighing my hair down. This is the product of my dreams. I layered just this under the AG styling lotion with amazing results. The moisture lock extreme hold gel- this gel doesn’t have extreme hold for me, but provides moisture with decent hold. I haven’t tried it on its own, but I enjoy the texture on my hair. And, it’s fine to just throw on second day hair to refresh, doesn’t look/feel producty. The moisture lock leave in- this would be my hg one and done product because it provides moisture, hold, and prevents frizz for me, but it makes my scalp burn. I’m hoping to get some use out of it when my hair is longer. Because it has silicone, I know it will dry my hair out in the long term, but it’s such a great formula. Mongongo oil- lightweight oil that reduces frizz and doesn’t look oily on my fine hair. I’ve only recently tried their products, and every but the anti-climate gels have been a hit for me.

I've tried most of the big brands and always come back to ouidad. Their heat and humidity gel and their leave in conditioner (one in the white and blue bottle) has been my jam for 15 years. I don't like the stronger hold gel much but that's just my hair. Shortish (well medium for a guy) 3a hair. Getting some grays so it does its thing Their shampoos and conditioners are also good but I actually don't think those are nearly as important as what you put in after washing. Also, bonus points for not smelling like shea butter or strawberry or anything strong. It has a neutral scent and as a guy that's what I want.

I don't think most men want to smell like vanilla or strawberries. I'd rather no scent or at least something neutral. Ouidad is as low scent and neutral as can get. Honestly I don't know why anyone would want it scented but if you ever see men's specific grooming products they're way more likely to be unscented or neutral. Although the scented ones just smell like bad mens cologne. Anyways, this is just a me thing but I think others will understand. I'm not making some judgement on it but if I want cologne i don't want it mixing with whatever scent is in my gel or conditioner.

I had to go fragrance free so tried and like Ouidad’s shampoo/conditioner. I have very fine and thinning 3b-ish hair that generally likes protein. So someone else’s mileage may vary. I tried the Climate control gel but just got frizz and no hold, curl formation, clumping, etc. No idea why. Haven’t tried the Advanced/extra hold version as can’t use fragranced products. This is another product that is so popular and widely sold I don’t understand why they can’t make a fragrance free version of it/the advanced one? Not to mention their other most popular products. They would surely sell — there’s a huge population of people who need ff and Ouidad is big enough to handle the initial costs…

The curly salons near me all push the Ouidad products, so I feel like I should enjoy them, but I don’t. I think my curls are somewhere in the 3b range. The climate control gel and the Curl Quencher Cream are decent, but I just never get good enough results to justify the price. I recently tried the Moisture Lock Leave In Conditioner, and the smell was terrible. It was a strong, lemony chemical smell with something funky behind it. It smelled like a port-a-potty with an air freshener in it. I’ll also say that the Ouidad salons that I’ve been to all seem to rely on the method of sectioning the hair, applying gobs of 3-4 different styling products, finger coiling throughout every section, and then taking forever to blow-dry on low. I prefer less of that sticky/shiny ultra definition, and more of a natural curl with volume. I lightly swipe/scrunch a medium hold curl lotion onto wet hair, sometimes top with a gel or mousse, and then dry. Lately, CurlSmith is my preferred brand, especially because I often find it on sale.

An Amazon "storefront" sold me counterfeit, diluted product with no fragrance; Ouidad confirmed it wasn't theirs. Watch out with Moroccanoil too.

Beware buying Ouidad (and Moroccan Oil brand, and probably others) off of Amazon!! When I ran out of the product I’d bought from the salon I thought I’d try and save some money and order from Amazon, from a very official looking Ouidad “storefront” - the bottles looked legit but the actual product was counterfeit and/or super diluted. No fragrance and watered down. I contacted Ouidad directly and they were like yeahhh…. That ain’t us.

Curls that frizz in heat and humidity
Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel
46 positive·10 mixed·18 negativeWhy This is what the Climate Control gel is for, and reviewers in Texas, Florida and Savannah say it keeps their curls defined through humid weeks.
But no cast or hold for some reviewers.
It isn't universal: reviewers in Miami, humid Georgia and very humid sea-level climates got no cast and frizz within hours. Several who struggled with the original had better luck with the stronger-hold red bottle, or by topping it with hairspray.
Fine hair that is easily weighed down
Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel
46 positive·10 mixed·18 negativeWhy Opinion splits.
But no cast or hold for some reviewers.
Reviewers with fine 2C, 3A and 3B curls call the gel amazing and say a little goes a long way on soaking wet hair. Others with very fine hair found it heavy and sticky, or gave no hold at all, and one reviewer with fine hair says the range builds up quickly. The Featherlight Styling Cream was too heavy for one reviewer even in the smallest amount.
A firm cast that lasts
Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel
46 positive·10 mixed·18 negativeWhy The original gel gives soft, touchable hold with no hard cast, and several reviewers wanting a crunchy cast found it too weak.
But no cast or hold for some reviewers.
The Advanced Climate Control (red label) is stronger, and its fans say it gives a cast other gels haven't, but others still found it weak or sticky once the cast was broken. Reviewers who needed more switched to Jessicurl Spiralicious or added Aussie Instant Freeze.
Sensitive to fragrance
The comments don't point clearly to one Ouidad product for this.
Why The leave-ins draw the most complaints: reviewers describe the Moisture Lock leave-in as strong, lemony and chemical, or a stale perfume they threw away.
Others say the range smells low and neutral, and one uses the shampoo and conditioner as a fragrance-free option, so experiences vary by product.
Probably skip Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner
Based on what commenters with similar hair reported. Hair varies.
