How is the Curl Score calculated?

We read 3 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. The verdict

A long-time go-to for some, especially paired with the gel, but its strong scent puts others off.

The full verdict

Fans call it life-changing alongside the Climate Control gel, and one reviewer has mixed the two in their palm for 15 years, on long and short hair. The complaints are about the smell and the scalp: one reviewer found it strong, lemony and chemical, and another says it would be their one-and-done product if it didn't make their scalp burn. There are only a handful of opinions so far.

I mix a bit of it with the climate control gel in my palm; works well on long and short hair.

I actually just mix it with their moisture lock leave in conditioner and it's works amazing when I've had long and short hair.

It would be my one-and-done product, but it makes my scalp burn.

I have very fine hair that springs up in humidity and loves protein and moisture. The anti-climate gel lasts all of 2 hours in medium humidity, forget high humidity! Maybe it will work well in winter. The moisture lock curl butter- I’ve used it twice, and it’s taken my curls from 2b, maybe 2c to easily 3a. It provides a good amount of moisture and definition without weighing my hair down. This is the product of my dreams. I layered just this under the AG styling lotion with amazing results. The moisture lock extreme hold gel- this gel doesn’t have extreme hold for me, but provides moisture with decent hold. I haven’t tried it on its own, but I enjoy the texture on my hair. And, it’s fine to just throw on second day hair to refresh, doesn’t look/feel producty. The moisture lock leave in- this would be my hg one and done product because it provides moisture, hold, and prevents frizz for me, but it makes my scalp burn. I’m hoping to get some use out of it when my hair is longer. Because it has silicone, I know it will dry my hair out in the long term, but it’s such a great formula. Mongongo oil- lightweight oil that reduces frizz and doesn’t look oily on my fine hair. I’ve only recently tried their products, and every but the anti-climate gels have been a hit for me.

A terrible smell: strong, lemony and chemical.

The curly salons near me all push the Ouidad products, so I feel like I should enjoy them, but I don’t. I think my curls are somewhere in the 3b range. The climate control gel and the Curl Quencher Cream are decent, but I just never get good enough results to justify the price. I recently tried the Moisture Lock Leave In Conditioner, and the smell was terrible. It was a strong, lemony chemical smell with something funky behind it. It smelled like a port-a-potty with an air freshener in it. I’ll also say that the Ouidad salons that I’ve been to all seem to rely on the method of sectioning the hair, applying gobs of 3-4 different styling products, finger coiling throughout every section, and then taking forever to blow-dry on low. I prefer less of that sticky/shiny ultra definition, and more of a natural curl with volume. I lightly swipe/scrunch a medium hold curl lotion onto wet hair, sometimes top with a gel or mousse, and then dry. Lately, CurlSmith is my preferred brand, especially because I often find it on sale.

Recently fell in love with Ouidad!! Their leave in conditioner + climate control gel has been life changing. The Mongongo oil is unreal. Love their shampoos and deep conditioners too. I’m a convert for sure

Miss Jessie’s multi cultural curls, Kerstase Elixir ultimate hydrating, Ouidad leave-in and Mielle Rosemary mint oil for my scalp are my go-to’s. I have Type 3b curls
