How is the Curl Score calculated?

We read 2 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. Sources and method

The verdict

A concentrated, non-sticky gelée that holds for days for most, but goes crunchy, matted or weak for some.

The full verdict

Fans call it their favourite styling product and a holy grail: hair lasts days, gets bigger and stays defined, and three pumps are enough on soaking wet hair. One reviewer uses it in winter for its humectant. The criticisms are consistent. Several found it too easy to get crunchy, with a cast that won't scrunch out, others ended up frizzy or matted after a few days, and a reviewer with thick, coarse hair found it didn't hold enough. One reviewer returned it: it smelled divine but gave no definition and left a sticky finish.

Best for
Multi-day definition on soaking wet hair, used sparingly
Skip it if
You tend to overdo gel, or your hair is thick and coarse

I liked it, but it was super easy to get too crunchy.

I’d been using I Create Curl Memory for a while and liked it although it was super easy to get too crunchy. I saw someone I think here post about I Create Volume and picked that up and fell in love! I do a layer of that topped with a layer of mousse (Herbal Essence at the moment) and have been getting incredible results. I planned to wash my hair today but had such good curls still after day 3 yesterday that I didn’t bother. Will probably go through day 5 tomorrow!

The only product that doesn't work for me: my hair looks amazing, but it mats after a few days, and it may mildly irritate my scalp.

The biggest thing with Innersense products is that they’re very concentrated. You have to add loads of water to get the seaweed/slippy feel but lord it’s so worth it. I’ve been using color radiance shampoo & conditioner, hydrating cream hairbath, I create hold & I create volume for a decade now. I have high density, fine 3c/4a curls. Start with a small amount then if your hair feels dry add warm water, repeat process until you get the feel of seaweed. The only product I’ve tried and can’t get to work for my hair is I create curl memory. My hair looks amazing but after a few days it gets so matted and I think something in it mildly irritates my scalp.

I like the I create curl memory because it’s a gelee and not sticky. I tried the I create hold recently and I had great results as well

I tried their daily shampoo and conditioner and was not the most impressed at the hydration from either product. I love their styling products. 2B-3A and I love the I Create Curl Memory and I Create Hold. I went from a 3 styler ouidad routine to a 2 styler innersense one and the products last so much longer because you don't need to use much.

I apply it liberally in my weekly routine.

Warning: I’m obsessed with this brand. The following paragraphs will probably sound like a very wordy ad. It’s not; I’m just passionate. I was a DevaCurl Girl back in the day, but their reformulation turned my curls into limp noodles, which started the Great Product Hunt. I tried a ton of brands (BounceCurl, Ouidad, AG, Curlsmith) but Innersense was the first one to make my curls look, feel and smell like I wanted. I have been loyal to this brand for years and have updated my routine a few times to incorporate new products. It’s not a cheap product line for sure, but I’ve found the products to be very concentrated and last far longer than you’d expect. My hair is primarily 3B curls that are low porosity and fine. However, I’ve been going gray since I was about 15 (thanks genetics) and have large chunks of white hair that is more slightly more coarse mixed in. I tend keep washing and wet-refreshing to a minimum since the combo of two different low porosity textures makes the process of getting my hair wet and then dry again take forever and provide uneven results. Here is my Great Big Routine that I do once a week (maybe twice if it’s absolutely necessary): First wash with Color Awakening Hairbath Second wash with Bright Balance Hairbath Bright Balance Conditioner Layer Sweet Spirit Leave In and Quiet Calm Curl Control (different parts of my hair need different moisture levels) Apply liberal amounts of I Create Curl Memory Brush in sections with the Slick-Dense Define Edgelift BounceCurl brush Scrunch in I Create Lift Squeeze out all of extra water I can Spray on KMS Therma Shape Quick Blow Dry Spray (one of my rare non-Innersense products and necessary to get my hair dry in under an hour) Diffuse until it’s fully dry or I’m sweating too much to keep going Since switching to Innersense, I don’t think I’ve gone a full week of my life without getting an unsolicited compliment on my hair. Yes, I put in the time and effort to get it there, but I do give the products a lot of the credit.

I love this brand! I have high density fine hair and find that most brands make my hair stiff. But their fine/medium shampoo and conditioner is perfect for my hair and their I create curl memory and I create lift works perfectly for my hair

I have been using this brand for a couple of years now. Here are my thoughts… Overall, my hair is much better shape now than it was before I started using any product in this brand. So I’m very happy with that. However, I do probably do things slightly different than other people. I have low porosity medium two thick density hair that is 3B to 3C. My hair hates products that are Shea butter based or have a lot of protein (I do realize that this brand uses those ingredients, but they are much further down on the ingredient list and my hair seems to be able to tolerate that ). My hair also hates curl creams—pretty much all curl creams, including curl creams from this brand. I also change up my product combination, depending on the time of year due to cold weather and dry air versus hot, humid weather and a lot of moisture in the air. I absolutely love, sweet spirit leave in conditioner. It has been the only conditioner it has not weighed down my hair. I have tried probably 30 or 40 different ones and this like I said is the only one that my Hair likes. I use I create volume as a filler after sweet Spirit. Then I do I create hold and top it off with I create Lyft volumizing foam. That’s my summer routine. These products make it so my hair last 4 to 5 days with minimal frizz because it does not allow my hair to absorb the moisture from the air (I can go seven days if I choose to as well). In the winter, I change it up to. I create curl memory, followed by the Lyft foam. I do this because in the winter where I am it is extremely dry and I do need something with a humectant in it to draw in some moisture. The only product I have not figured out how to use properly on my hair is I create definition foam. No matter how I pair it my hair literally flash dries. No matter what oil I use or whether I use oil or not, I cannot scrunch out the crunch because my hair literally breaks. This happens whether I use something underneath it or just use that foam. Once a week I shampoo with their color, awakening hair bath, and color radiance conditioner. The other wash day I actually use a clarifying shampoo— Malibu C undo goo. And follow that with the color awakening hair bath. I deep condition and do a repair treatment both from Innersense. That I’ve been extremely happy with. My routine has also allowed me to go a full week between wash days sometimes. That depends honestly on my activity for the week and how my hair is feeling on my scalp. So I would say I go a full seven days probably once a month other than that, I split it and do two days a week. Overall, this is the only brand where I’ve had success over multiple products. I have attempted pairing products from different brands with this brand in the past and I was never crazy about the end results. Yes it is pricey, but the products tend to last in exceedingly long time for me so, I feel like I’m actually spending about as much or less as I was prior when I was switching up products on a regular basis.

Three pumps on soaking wet hair is enough, because it's so concentrated.

I have super dense medium porosity 3b curls and use only three pumps of the ICCM in soaking wet hair, then scrunch it out before plopping. It seemed like a small amount at first but it’s so concentrated, you really don’t need much. Maybe try using a little less?

  12. PositiveReddit comment

I love how it performs, but it's heavy-duty and sticky or crunchy if overdone.

I have a love hate relationship with this brand. Hate the shampoo and conditioners, hate the herbal smells, hate the marketing mantras on the bottles. I was gifted my initial trial products otherwise I never would have touched them. That said… LOVE the way the stylers perform. Create Hold and Curl Memory are pretty heavy duty hold products and not to be applied with reckless abandon. Very sticky and crunchy if overdone, where Quiet Calm CC will leave you feeling waxy if you use too much. I am usually an evening airdry person, but if I mist with water and diffuse the following morning, I get 4 good looking hair days, with almost every styler combo I’ve tried.

I loooove I create curl memory. Everyone raves about I create hold but with I create curl memory my hair lasts days. I personally love definition and crunch, over the days my hair gets bigger and still defined. My holy grail for sure.

  14. MixedReddit comment

The only hold product that gives me multi-day definition without much frizz, but the crunch is too much and won't scrunch out.

Ooh, I just bought my second bottle of I Create Curl Memory because it has been the only gel (or any hold product) that has given me definition that lasts through multiple days without much frizz. But I hesitated a bit because while I love the look I don’t love the feel. The crunch can be too much for me and I can’t scrunch it out. Now you have me wondering if I should try I Create Volume instead! Can you compare the two any more for me?

Smells divine, but no definition or frizz control, and a sticky finish. I'm returning it.

I gathered my I Create Curl Memory, my receipt for $30.00 and I'll be headed back to Ulta to return. I really wanted this to work on my thick, curly hair. The smell is divine, but it didn't help with definition or frizz control. When my hair dried, it was left with a sticky texture. I gave it two shots, but sadly, it didn't work for me.
