How is the Curl Score calculated?
We read 2 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. The verdict
Mostly disappointing: sticky, tangly and gone by day two for most, and it turned one scalp red.
The full verdict
One reviewer finds it really nice. The others are less keen: one used half a bottle as a spray gel in a pinch but found it dried sticky with no second day and not worth the price, another says it’s OK-ish but causes tangles and looks terrible on day two, one hates it, and one says it disagreed with their skin and turned their scalp red.
- Best for
- A quick spray on loose waves, if you've tried it and like it
- Skip it if
- You want hold that lasts to day two, or your scalp reacts easily

I really like their styling products for my fine loose curls. I really love pairing the volume foam with the flexi jelly, and I really like using the in shower style fixer as a single styler. The wave spray and hairspray is really nice too. I cant figure out the soufflé though lol. I think it might be too heavy for my hair. I like the air dry cream when I use it in place of my regular rinse out conditioner. It’s super slippy and light so it works well for that. I don’t tend to use leave ins other than to replace my rinse out conditioner and I tend to use drugstore conditioners anyway so I haven’t tried their shampoos/conditioners. I use to really like the post wash calming conditioner as I got it on clearance once, but they discontinued it :(

This brand is love or hate for me, very little in between. I have super soft baby-fine wavy hair. LOVE: the XXL Diffuser, the Fragrance-Free Strong Hold Gel. Both are HG. HATE: the Wave Spray, the In-Shower Style Fixer, and the Air Dry Cream. I also loathe the scent of the moisture line, so I realllly hate the new packaging because I can’t tell what’s going to have that “orange line smell”. Tempted to try the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly, but I’m on the fence because the Shine Jelly worked poorly for me… Also tempted by the Mousse and the Foam but it’s tough because omg it’s so overpriced.

I’ve tried a fair few of their products to find something nice for my thin/fine hair. Top for me: bouncy strength volume foam. My hair loves it, BUT I only use it for a refresh. It doesn’t form a cast so it doesn’t lock in my style for more than a day. Great for giving life back to my curls on day like 3 or 4, if I were getting my hair wet every day this is the only product I’d use. Hydro style flexi jelly: for me this behaves identically to the LA looks blue gel, which is my go to, so I don’t really see a need to pay more. Smells nice though! In shower style fixer: forms a cast like instantly, it’s crazy how hard hold it is. I need to dilute it a ton to avoid product overload. Holds my styling for like a week lol. Their hairspray: smells nice, doesn’t leave my hair feeling hay-esque or staticky, I enjoyed using it in lieu of a hard gold gel for a while because it creates a rock solid cast but has no weight. I only stopped using it because I got a little birdie that can’t be around aerosols :) Edit: almost forgot the waves spray? Something about this product really disagreed with my skin and would turn my scalp red.

Mine is 2B/2C with the right products. I've yet to love anything my Curlsmith. The ones I've tried either make my hair stringy, tangly, frizzy, or greasy. Just doesn't work for me. I do better with sea salt spray incorporated, and their wave spray is okayish, but does cause me tangles and looks terrible day 2.

Fine, medium porosity 2B here—extensive use of their line—here are my thoughts— ✅Curling Souffle— Love. Used up a jar or two. Can cause frizz in high humidity (rain) or cause hair to fall flat in very low humidity (<40%) due to high glycerin. Functions best in mid-humidity and operates much like Kinky Curly Curling Custard or other light humectant gels. ✅Hydro Style Flexi Jelly- finished a couple of bottles. Great all-purpose gel that is very resistant to humidity. Low or no protein, low glycerin. It’s a great one stop shop. It doesn’t give you the best hair you’ve ever had, but it’s super consistent and great for people living in variable climates. ✅Shine Jelly (6)- Unscented!! I’ve used at least one bottle. Light hold thin gel. I tend to need a lot of it, but I like it. Reminds me of Jessicurl Confident Coils. Humidity resistant due to lower glycerin. ✅Shine Gel (9)- Unscented!! On my 2nd tube and it appears to be discontinued. It’s strong hold and does have a learning curve for finer hair. It’s easy to use too much and make your hair sticky and buildupy. Use a lot of water with it. I mix it with water and leave-in. But it’s such good hold you can sleep in it wet and be ok. Be careful of flash drying. Definitely use leave-in conditioner first. Humidity resistant due to lower glycerin. ✅ Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash- on my 3rd bottle. Good co-wash. Does build up, so I don’t use it more than once a week. And then I clarify once a month. But more cleansing than just using conditioner. Not stripping. Fantastic for outdoorsy trips in which I need to just remove sweat or dirty from my hair. ❌In Shower Fixer— heavy and sticky with flash-drying ❌Shape Up Aqua Gel— Thin gel, strong smell. Not good hold. I have to layer it over the souffle or under a foam to get good results. It works ok as a 2nd or 3rd day product add-on. Struggling to use it up. ❌Hold Me Softly Balm— I do love this for when my hair is dry and I’m getting a lot of flash drying with gel because it creates a nice barrier to stop flash drying. But the buildup is insane and it causes a cycle of dryness by building up and blocking out good moisture. ❌Effortless Waves spray— good spray gel in a pinch. I used half a bottle. I find it dries sticky and I can’t get a second day out of it. It works to add product if you didn’t use enough gel originally, but there are better products for that, and I don’t think this performs better than the drugstore ones. Not worth the price. ❌Double Quench mask- too heavy. Builds up.
