The Curly Hair Society verdict

Curlsmith: is it worth it?

Divides opinion

A few stylers have real fans. The brand as a whole is more divisive than its reputation suggests.

In the thread about the brand, comments on Curlsmith as a whole were mostly negative: the price, the scent, scalp itch, and hair left greasy, stringy or flat. The products themselves fare better. The Hydro Style Flexi Jelly is the clear favourite, and the Air Dry Cream and Curl Soufflé have more fans than critics. The In-Shower Style Fixer splits reviewers down the middle.

Fine hair that is easily weighed down

Start with the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly: several reviewers with fine waves and curls call it their favourite, and say it is light. Fine-haired reviewers were also the ones most likely to find the brand greasy, stringy or flat, and the Air Dry Cream and Curl Soufflé were too heavy for some. One reviewer with fine hair dilutes the Air Dry Cream in a spray bottle.

  1. PositiveCurlsmith

Curlsmith is the only brand that pleases both my hair AND skin (contact dermatitis with other brands). Blue line great, plus some purple mask products.

Most of my products nowadays are curlsmith. My hair is pretty normal, medium density, likely medium porosity but tending towards dryness. However some products give me contact dermatitis so I have to be careful. Curlsmith stuff is the only brand that seems to please both my hair AND skin consistently. I use their hydro flexi jelly and their soothing hair mask every wash day. I've tried their 3-1 protein mask roo before and liked that as a mask and a leave in. The oils are great too, only oils I've tried that don't leave my hair greasy. As long as I don't use too much of course. Tldr: curlsmith good and sensitive skin friendly. Blue line is great along with some purple mask products. If you can only try one item from them, try the hydro flexi jelly

  2. PositiveHydro Style Flexi Jelly

Finished a couple of bottles. Great all-purpose gel, very humidity resistant, low/no protein, low glycerin. Doesn't give the best hair you've ever had but super consistent.

Fine, medium porosity 2B here—extensive use of their line—here are my thoughts— ✅Curling Souffle— Love. Used up a jar or two. Can cause frizz in high humidity (rain) or cause hair to fall flat in very low humidity (<40%) due to high glycerin. Functions best in mid-humidity and operates much like Kinky Curly Curling Custard or other light humectant gels. ✅Hydro Style Flexi Jelly- finished a couple of bottles. Great all-purpose gel that is very resistant to humidity. Low or no protein, low glycerin. It’s a great one stop shop. It doesn’t give you the best hair you’ve ever had, but it’s super consistent and great for people living in variable climates. ✅Shine Jelly (6)- Unscented!! I’ve used at least one bottle. Light hold thin gel. I tend to need a lot of it, but I like it. Reminds me of Jessicurl Confident Coils. Humidity resistant due to lower glycerin. ✅Shine Gel (9)- Unscented!! On my 2nd tube and it appears to be discontinued. It’s strong hold and does have a learning curve for finer hair. It’s easy to use too much and make your hair sticky and buildupy. Use a lot of water with it. I mix it with water and leave-in. But it’s such good hold you can sleep in it wet and be ok. Be careful of flash drying. Definitely use leave-in conditioner first. Humidity resistant due to lower glycerin. ✅ Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash- on my 3rd bottle. Good co-wash. Does build up, so I don’t use it more than once a week. And then I clarify once a month. But more cleansing than just using conditioner. Not stripping. Fantastic for outdoorsy trips in which I need to just remove sweat or dirty from my hair. ❌In Shower Fixer— heavy and sticky with flash-drying ❌Shape Up Aqua Gel— Thin gel, strong smell. Not good hold. I have to layer it over the souffle or under a foam to get good results. It works ok as a 2nd or 3rd day product add-on. Struggling to use it up. ❌Hold Me Softly Balm— I do love this for when my hair is dry and I’m getting a lot of flash drying with gel because it creates a nice barrier to stop flash drying. But the buildup is insane and it causes a cycle of dryness by building up and blocking out good moisture. ❌Effortless Waves spray— good spray gel in a pinch. I used half a bottle. I find it dries sticky and I can’t get a second day out of it. It works to add product if you didn’t use enough gel originally, but there are better products for that, and I don’t think this performs better than the drugstore ones. Not worth the price. ❌Double Quench mask- too heavy. Builds up.

  3. NegativeCurlsmith

Worst hair care brand I've tried. Dandruff at full force, oily flat hair, no curl definition, not soft. Friend in same area said the same; may be humidity. Regret buying a full set untested.

Personally, Curlsmith is the worst hair care brand I've tried to date. My friend who lives in the same area as me said the same. It might be because of the humidity here. I don't know. But after using only Curlsmith products for a while, my dandruff was at full force, my hair was oily and flat, and I had no curl definition. I can't even say my hair was soft or anything. I think I would have been better off using no products at all. Some people think it's amazing. I personally regret buying a full set without testing a product or two first.

I've found numerous Curlsmith products at Marshalls for $12. If you live in the US and have one nearby it is worth a try! Sometimes the products are offered online but I've had better luck at the store. Curlsmith have increased volume for my fine hair, so I suspect you're on the right track. I have low porosity hair, so unsure of how well Curlsmith works for high/medium porosity.

  2. NegativeCurlsmith

Most products aren't worth the price; no good hold beyond 1 day (sleeps in bonnet/pineapple).

Everyone recommended it during one of Ultas sales. I bought almost every product. The only product I’d rebuy is the oil in cream leave in conditioner. I hate that it’s a tub but it’s nice and leaves my hair moisturized. Works best if you also use a gel but I can usually get a cast with just this cream if I’m lazy or rushed. The moisture memory reactivator is not good. It smells nice. But the consistency of the product isn’t compatible for what it’s supposed to be. It’s too thick so you have to touch your hair or it sits on top. You also can’t use it on dry hair. I diluted it in a spray bottle which is fine, but doesn’t work better than any normal conditioner diluted in a spray bottle. Performs worse than the Cantù one. The bumble and bumble one was better than both. The Aussie brand is significantly better and cheaper. The rehab salve was the most recommended and so I was the most disappointed. I have no idea what this product is supposed to do because it doesn’t do anything. I’ve used it alone and with other products. It has no real effect on my curl pattern… I’ve used it wet and dry. So I guess it doesn’t make my hair worse…. Which is good? But truly, I can’t explain here without pictures how little this product does. Ultimately, I don’t think most of them are worth the price. They also don’t really give you a good hold beyond 1 day (I sleep in bonnet and pineapple). Which is why it’s disappointing their refresh is so odd. I’m biracial, fine 3b/3c mix with some portions 2c, bleaching hair for 10+ years. I like b curls green gel (only on soaking wet hair immediately after the shower otherwise it’s disgusting and clumpy), and blueberry bliss leave in.

  3. PositiveMoisture Only Deep Conditioner

The only Curlsmith product I've really liked is their moisture only deep conditioner. Thinks other brands are equal or better at the same/lower price.

I think there are products equally as good or better than curlsmith at equal or less price points. I have tried so many brands and have found that my hair looks best when I use products from a couple different lines -(I have fine 2c hair). I also think those quizzes will recommend more products than you may actually need. For my hair, I start with AG curl trigger spray and follow with AG mousse gel (mousse) then finish with either ouidad humidity fighting gel or Innersense I create volume gel but this is my routine after trying so many different products and lines and figuring out what works for my hair specifically. I shampoo with Innersense shampoo and conditioner. I have tried several curlsmith products - the only product I’ve really liked is their moisture only deep conditioner. With that said, I highly recommend buying anything you can in a travel size and trying it before going all in with full size products. I have saved a lot doing that for trying new products.

FWIW, I really like some of their products, but the best thing I think that the brand has going for them, is the curl quiz. I know of no other brands that have such an extensive questionnaire for you to independently discover your curl and hair type, and then, get a whole recommended regimen for free. Now, I have mixed feelings about their products. I love the hydroflexi jelly, but wasn’t impressed with the in-shower cream. I do like their curl oil. I also like the curl in oil styling cream. I have 3a/2c curls, low porosity. I’d recommend first buying the travel sizes to sample before investing in the entire line.

  6. PositiveCurl Quenching Conditioning Wash

I hated the flexi jelly - it has almost no hold and made my hair feel sticky. Waste of money IMO. I would never just buy an entire lines recommendation of products. Try things one at a time as you likely don't need 4 products anyhow. I do like some of their deep conditioners and the shape up aqua gel and the volume foam was ok but overall I am not loyal to their products - I prefer some living proof and ouidad options. Learning product application techniques are really going to the heavy lifting more so than the specific products you use.

Love the souffle and fragrance free gel. Volume foam and protein gel are meh. Volume mousse is okay. I remember LOVING both their foam and mousse the First time I tried them but could never recreate it again. I like the fragrance free leavein okay. Didn’t love the fragrance free shampoo and conditioner. Absolutely hated in shower style fixer and hold me softly style balm. Also strongly dislike the miracle shield

  12. PositiveFragrance Free Shine Jelly

I have their fragrance free shine jelly and like it, but it makes my scalp itch near the roots (common with gels for me). Full prices out of budget; curly shampoo/conditioner never worked well.

It sounds like their stuff is pretty hit or miss for most people, which is pretty much inevitable with how many products they offer. I have their fragrance free shine jelly and like it, but if I get it too close to my roots it makes my scalp itch (a lot of gels give me that problem tho). I’d never design a routine around their stuff bc the full prices are kinda out of my budget and I never felt like curly shampoo/conditioner worked all that well for me

  13. PositiveMiracle Shield

Hated every Curlsmith product I've tried. Hate the smell, stylers make hair stringy and dry. The cast is next to impossible to break.

Good spray gel in a pinch; used half a bottle. Dries sticky, no second day. Better products exist; not worth the price.

Smells nice but too thick, sits on top, can't use on dry hair. Diluted in a spray bottle it works no better than normal conditioner; worse than Cantu, bumble and bumble, and Aussie.

Thin gel, strong smell, not good hold. Have to layer over the souffle or under a foam. OK as a 2nd/3rd day add-on. Struggling to use it up.

Jessicurl too shea conditioner (as conditioner and leave in) Jessicurl Spiralicious gel (for hold and frizz control). I use more products on washday, almost always a cream and another gel (I layer multiple gels), some brands I like are inahsi, boucleme, treluxe. I do like some curlsmith products for my hair, but most give me a terrible scalp itch, I can’t use anything from the protein line at all, my scalp hurts instantly when I do. Next time my friend visits (she lives abroad), she’ll get them all. Her scalp isn’t sensitive and she is really happy to get the products that don’t work for me.

I’m pretty budgeted on products, especially since I wash my hair every 2-3 days. My drugstore routine is Function of Beauty curly hair shampoo & conditioner, Shea moisture Jamaican castor oil leave in, and Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie, styled with a denman brush So curious about curlsmith but it’s $100/bottle on amazon 😳

I have fine 2C-3A hair. Dollar General released a hair care line called Curl Rhythm and I’m obsessed with it. The entire line is fantastic for my hair. I’m super sensitive to fragrances, & Curlsmith products trigger a bad allergy on my scalp, but the Curl Rhythm line doesn’t bother me at all. I also love Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls & Jelly Soft Curls, Mielle Babassu & Mint deep conditioner, Mielle pomegranate & honey curl defining mousse (used very sparingly on my hair) and when I can muster the effort, I love home made flaxseed gel.

I used either only curls or curlsmith and they are top tier in my opinion. The crème from only curls is great, makes your hair less frizzy and a lovely smell. They also have a mousse and differing levels of hold gels for preference. I've used the shampoo and conditioner too and all have been great.

  69. PositiveCurlsmith Conditioner

Switched to a Curlsmith conditioner (suited hair's protein needs).

I've used that set. I didn't love the shampoo or conditioner but I'm in a hard water area and my hair needed a lot of protein so I switched to a curlsmith conditioner. But I love the curl crème. And it lasts for ages as I only use a little bit under my gel. I did use their gel and it was ok but I found another I preferred.
