What reviewers say

Fans describe a hard hold that controls frizz, lasts several days and, for one reviewer with fine curls, doesn’t weigh hair down. One says it took a few tries to find the right amount. In the thread about the brand, critics outnumber fans: they found it heavy and sticky when flash-drying, tacky, or simply hated it, and one who bought it at TJ Maxx decided there were better gels even at that price. One critic called it a cream, so they may have had a different product in mind.

Praised for

  • A strong hold that lasts several days
  • Good frizz control
  • Doesn’t weigh down fine curls, for one
  • A light cast, for one

Complaints

  • Leaves hair tacky
  • Heavy and sticky when flash-drying
  • Better gels for the money, for some

Just got their In Shower Styler and I love it. Light cast with great hold. Can't attest to humidity (lives in desert).

I recently got their In Shower Styler and I love it. I use Tre Luxe serum to start because it has a lot of slip to form my clumps then praying hands of in shower over it and scrunch then plop. Light cast with great hold. I can’t attest for humidity because I live in the desert.

  2. Positive

I can't live without the In Shower Style Fixer.

I’m the opposite. The Hydro Flex does nothing for my hair and I can’t live without the In Shower Style Fixer.

Got the Curlsmith shower one at TJ Maxx. I liked it at first, but then realized there are better products out there even at the TJ Maxx price.

Go to Tj Maxx and you’ll find it for half the price. That’s where I got the CurlSmith shower one, when I was debating to try it just like you. I liked it at first, but then realized there are better products out there for even the Tj Maxx price.

  5. Negative

    Heavy and sticky with flash-drying.

Fine, medium porosity 2B here—extensive use of their line—here are my thoughts— ✅Curling Souffle— Love. Used up a jar or two. Can cause frizz in high humidity (rain) or cause hair to fall flat in very low humidity (<40%) due to high glycerin. Functions best in mid-humidity and operates much like Kinky Curly Curling Custard or other light humectant gels. ✅Hydro Style Flexi Jelly- finished a couple of bottles. Great all-purpose gel that is very resistant to humidity. Low or no protein, low glycerin. It’s a great one stop shop. It doesn’t give you the best hair you’ve ever had, but it’s super consistent and great for people living in variable climates. ✅Shine Jelly (6)- Unscented!! I’ve used at least one bottle. Light hold thin gel. I tend to need a lot of it, but I like it. Reminds me of Jessicurl Confident Coils. Humidity resistant due to lower glycerin. ✅Shine Gel (9)- Unscented!! On my 2nd tube and it appears to be discontinued. It’s strong hold and does have a learning curve for finer hair. It’s easy to use too much and make your hair sticky and buildupy. Use a lot of water with it. I mix it with water and leave-in. But it’s such good hold you can sleep in it wet and be ok. Be careful of flash drying. Definitely use leave-in conditioner first. Humidity resistant due to lower glycerin. ✅ Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash- on my 3rd bottle. Good co-wash. Does build up, so I don’t use it more than once a week. And then I clarify once a month. But more cleansing than just using conditioner. Not stripping. Fantastic for outdoorsy trips in which I need to just remove sweat or dirty from my hair. ❌In Shower Fixer— heavy and sticky with flash-drying ❌Shape Up Aqua Gel— Thin gel, strong smell. Not good hold. I have to layer it over the souffle or under a foam to get good results. It works ok as a 2nd or 3rd day product add-on. Struggling to use it up. ❌Hold Me Softly Balm— I do love this for when my hair is dry and I’m getting a lot of flash drying with gel because it creates a nice barrier to stop flash drying. But the buildup is insane and it causes a cycle of dryness by building up and blocking out good moisture. ❌Effortless Waves spray— good spray gel in a pinch. I used half a bottle. I find it dries sticky and I can’t get a second day out of it. It works to add product if you didn’t use enough gel originally, but there are better products for that, and I don’t think this performs better than the drugstore ones. Not worth the price. ❌Double Quench mask- too heavy. Builds up.

    Leaves my hair really tacky.

Sometimes I can find Curlsmith products discounted at Marshall’s. They are usually about half off. I’m ok with paying that amount. Not worth the full price I have 2b/2c medium porosity hair. The in shower style fixer and volume moose leave my hair really tacky. Hydro flex jelly looks good for one day. Hold is gone by day two. The shampoo/conditioner’s seem decent.

Same! I love the Hydro Flex Jelly more than anything but hated the In Shower Styler. Curlsmith is expensive but I still love that gel.

Love the souffle and fragrance free gel. Volume foam and protein gel are meh. Volume mousse is okay. I remember LOVING both their foam and mousse the First time I tried them but could never recreate it again. I like the fragrance free leavein okay. Didn’t love the fragrance free shampoo and conditioner. Absolutely hated in shower style fixer and hold me softly style balm. Also strongly dislike the miracle shield

  9. Negative

Wasn't impressed with the in-shower cream.

FWIW, I really like some of their products, but the best thing I think that the brand has going for them, is the curl quiz. I know of no other brands that have such an extensive questionnaire for you to independently discover your curl and hair type, and then, get a whole recommended regimen for free. Now, I have mixed feelings about their products. I love the hydroflexi jelly, but wasn’t impressed with the in-shower cream. I do like their curl oil. I also like the curl in oil styling cream. I have 3a/2c curls, low porosity. I’d recommend first buying the travel sizes to sample before investing in the entire line.

Deva curl no poo / low poo (alternate) Deva curl one condition Biolage hydra source leave in Sebastian potion 9 (or curlsmith inshower styler gel) Makes my hair feel soft and curly. I crave the fresh smell of these products. I like defined curls, and potion 9 or inshower styler keeps them firmly defined. Grandma would hug me longer & day you smell wonderful.

  12. Positive

Strong hold and anti-frizz; needed a few tries to find the right amount; lasts several days.

I have thick curly hair. I have an awesome hair chick and everyone thinks it’s natural. I used Diva url for a decade, and then it just “stopped working” last year. She told me several of her clients were complaining about the formulas. I switched to Mizani and Curlsmith! And won’t go back to anything else. They are both amazing. You must try the CurlSmith In-Shower Style Fixer. It is strong hold and anti-frizz. I had to play around with it a few times to figure out how much to use. One point I look like Cameron Diaz in Something about Mary. 😂 But now I can go several days without washing and just wetting it and restyling. Towel dry and apply it 👍🏻.
