How is the Curl Score calculated?

We read 3 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. The verdict

One of the best-liked Curlsmith products: a bond repair treatment that brought damaged curls back for many.

The full verdict

Reviewers call it a must-have, and one says it and the In-Shower Style Fixer saved their hair. The strongest review is from a reviewer with fine 2A–3A hair who was considering a pixie cut: after about 20 minutes their curls came back to life and tangled less, though it did nothing for their mum. Others say it’s excellent for fine curls, or the only product their hair likes, often bought discounted at TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Two reviewers found it did nothing, including one who calls it the most recommended product and so the most disappointing.

Best for
Damaged or heat-styled curls that have lost their pattern

Don’t love the smells but bond repair and mousse are excellent for my fine curls.

It fixes my curls: after about 20 minutes they came back to life and tangle less (I'd been considering a pixie cut). It does nothing for my mum.

Bond curl rehab salve fixes my curls. I was seriously considering a pixie cut because my hair was not cooperating at all. I put that in and left it for like 20 minutes and my curls came back to life and my hair gets so much less tangled. It doesn’t really do anything for my mom though.

The most recommended, so the most disappointing: it doesn't do anything. No real effect on my curl pattern, wet or dry.

Everyone recommended it during one of Ultas sales. I bought almost every product. The only product I’d rebuy is the oil in cream leave in conditioner. I hate that it’s a tub but it’s nice and leaves my hair moisturized. Works best if you also use a gel but I can usually get a cast with just this cream if I’m lazy or rushed. The moisture memory reactivator is not good. It smells nice. But the consistency of the product isn’t compatible for what it’s supposed to be. It’s too thick so you have to touch your hair or it sits on top. You also can’t use it on dry hair. I diluted it in a spray bottle which is fine, but doesn’t work better than any normal conditioner diluted in a spray bottle. Performs worse than the Cantù one. The bumble and bumble one was better than both. The Aussie brand is significantly better and cheaper. The rehab salve was the most recommended and so I was the most disappointed. I have no idea what this product is supposed to do because it doesn’t do anything. I’ve used it alone and with other products. It has no real effect on my curl pattern… I’ve used it wet and dry. So I guess it doesn’t make my hair worse…. Which is good? But truly, I can’t explain here without pictures how little this product does. Ultimately, I don’t think most of them are worth the price. They also don’t really give you a good hold beyond 1 day (I sleep in bonnet and pineapple). Which is why it’s disappointing their refresh is so odd. I’m biracial, fine 3b/3c mix with some portions 2c, bleaching hair for 10+ years. I like b curls green gel (only on soaking wet hair immediately after the shower otherwise it’s disgusting and clumpy), and blueberry bliss leave in.
