What reviewers say

Reviewers are split almost evenly. Fans say they can’t live without it, that it holds without looking or feeling like gel, and that it works mixed with Aussie’s gel or alongside salon products. Critics found it frizzy whatever they paired it with, heavy even in a tiny amount on coarse hair, or simply ineffective; one suspects it suits intensive plop-and-diffuse routines better. A reviewer with low-density hair says it is the only product in the range they dislike, and another with fine 2A hair found the hold lighter than Aussie’s Instant Freeze.

Sorry I didn't see this till now but I use Maui moisture (lightweight hydration) shampoo and conditioner, I use kinky curly leaves in, the doux styling foam, and cake products mousse. Sometimes I'll scrunch the not your mother's gel after everything too

My hair absolutely HATES the Curl Talk gel. No matter what products I use with it, or if I use no other products at all. It makes my hair so frizzy.

  6. Positive

You can pry the curl talk gel from my cold, dead hands. The curl talk oil is the first oil I tried that I could put all over my hair, even by my scalp, without it getting weighed down, limp, and greasy. I also use the rice water and himalayan moringa conditioner (from the naturals line) which is great if you need to add some protein into your routine, and it smells delicious. I seriously think you can’t go wrong with their products, it just might take some trial and error to see what works for your hair.

  7. Positive

Similar results to the cream; liked it mixed with Aussie gel.

I just recently switched to using NYM products as well and so far I’m really liking them. I feel like I get similar results using the gel or the cream. I did not like the mousse. It was fine, but for my routine, I much prefer Herbal Essences curl mousse. I had a bunch of old Aussie gel that I didn’t want to waste, so I mixed it with NYM gel and I think I like the combined product more than either gel on its own.

  8. Positive

Holds without feeling or looking like gel in the hair.

They are my favorite, I use the leave in conditioner, mousse and gel. Surprisingly the gel holds but doesn’t feel or look like gel in the hair. I get the same result pretty much every time with this product, but I also have a strict routine, haha. I used to use their shampoo but I’ve switched to Saltair.

  9. Positive

    Mixed in with salon-quality products.

Like it! I mix the gel, dry shampoo and bonding deep conditioner in with all my expensive salon quality stuff

  10. Mention

Lighter hold than Aussie Instant Freeze; willing to try again.

I have fine 2A hair, so may not help you specifically but I'll share. The Curl Talk shampoo I found really dense and it barely lathered in my hair, so no good volume. The gel seemed lighter hold than what I usually use (Aussie instant freeze), but I'd be willing to try it again. I'm interested in trying some of their other styling products eventually

  11. Negative

Only product in the range they dislike; low-density hair does not like it.

I've been using NYM products consistently for about 9 years. I like their shampoos and conditioners (the original line, the bond line, and the clarifying scalp clay scrub in the little tube). I always have at least one in my rotation at all times. My curls are obsessed with their mousse. I've tried so many products from salon quality brands, and I always come back to this mousse. Their refresh foam is great, also. The gel doesn't do it for me. Out of all their products I've tried, the gel is the only thing I didn't like. However, many people love that gel. My low density hair just doesn't like it. While this brand works for a lot of people, it just might not be for you, and that's okay, too.

  12. Negative

Does nothing for them; probably better for intensive plop-and-diffuse routines.

3A-3B, high porosity, thick Out of all their products I've tried, the gel is the only thing I didn't like. However, many people love that gel. My low density hair just doesn't like it. My hair is pretty solidly medium density, and it also doesn't like that gel. It just doesn't really do anything for me. I get better frizz control from thick leave-in conditioner creams like Cantu and better definition from mousses. I think it is probably ideal for people who are more about intensive styling routines like plopping + diffusing, but not so much for people like me who mostly want to let their hair do whatever it wants while just boosting definition and tamping down frizz with product.
