Naturals Gardenia & Mango Butter Shampoo & Conditioner
A well-liked budget wash day, though one reviewer found the conditioner left a film.
Brand Reviews · US
An affordable American drugstore brand, best known among curly-haired reviewers for its Curl Talk line. We collated what they say about it, product by product, so you can tell what will suit your hair.
The Curly Hair Society verdict
Good value and well liked, especially on waves and looser curls. The Curl Talk stylers are hit and miss.
Most reviewers are fans, and several have used the brand for years, praising the price, consistent results and how easy it is to find. The complaints centre on the Curl Talk stylers: the gel is the most divisive product, the mousse left some reviewers’ hair sticky or crunchy, and reviewers with dense, coarse hair found the range didn’t give them enough moisture.
Waves and loose curls on a budget, and anyone after a light refresh foam.
Your hair is dense, coarse or very dry, or you want a strong-hold gel.

The Curl Talk Refreshing Curl Foam is the light option: the few reviewers who mention it say it doesn’t weigh hair down and isn’t sticky, though the hold is soft. The gel is the one to be careful with. A reviewer with low-density hair says it is the only product in the range they dislike, and another with fine 2A hair found its hold lighter than Aussie’s gel.
Probably skip Curl Talk Frizz Control Sculpting Gel
This is where reviewers were least impressed. One with dense, medium-coarse hair found the samples didn’t condition or hydrate enough, another found the range wasn’t moisturising enough for them though it suits their husband’s curls, and a reviewer with coarse hair found the gel heavy and frizzy even in a tiny amount.
Probably skip Curl Talk Frizz Control Sculpting Gel
The Naturals Gardenia & Mango Butter shampoo and conditioner is the best reviewed wash-day product, with three fans, though one reviewer with 2C curls found the conditioner left a film that lasted several washes. A couple of reviewers also like the Curl Talk Bond Building shampoo and conditioner.

Shampoo & conditioner
A well-liked budget wash day, though one reviewer found the conditioner left a film.
The mousse has more fans than critics, including a reviewer who keeps coming back to it over salon brands, but several found it sticky or crunchy. The Refreshing Curl Foam is lighter and not sticky, with a softer hold, though only a few reviewers mention it. The gel splits reviewers evenly, so it’s the one to try last.

PositiveCurl Talk mousse
Curls are obsessed; keeps coming back to it over salon-quality brands.
u/madele44Low density hairr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I've been using NYM products consistently for about 9 years. I like their shampoos and conditioners (the original line, the bond line, and the clarifying scalp clay scrub in the little tube). I always have at least one in my rotation at all times. My curls are obsessed with their mousse. I've tried so many products from salon quality brands, and I always come back to this mousse. Their refresh foam is great, also. The gel doesn't do it for me. Out of all their products I've tried, the gel is the only thing I didn't like. However, many people love that gel. My low density hair just doesn't like it. While this brand works for a lot of people, it just might not be for you, and that's okay, too.
NegativeCurl Talk
Does not work; made curls look awful.
u/misty_girlFine 2C/3A/3B curls that love moisturer/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I have fine 2c/3a/3b curls that love moisture. The Curl Talk line does not work on my hair. It actually made my curls look awful. I’m still trying to find the perfect shampoo and conditioner, but for styling products I use Uncle Funky’s Daughter curly magic curl stimulator and Curlsmith curl defining styling souffle.
PositiveCurl Talk Curl Care Shampoo
Hair has never looked better; daughter (3B/C) also gets great results.
u/ReturnOfTheFox2B/Cr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
My hair is 2B/C. I started using Not Your Mother's a few months ago and my hair has never looked better. I use the Curl Talk Curl Care Shampoo, Curl Talk Bond Building Conditioner, and Curl Talk Defining Cream. On non-wash days I sometimes use the dry shampoo. My daughter has 3B/C hair and also uses these products with great results.
NegativeRange
Not conditioning or hydrating enough for dense, medium-coarse hair.
u/freesmarches3A-ish, collarbone length, dense, medium-coarse, medium porosityr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I have curly (3aish) hair, around collarbone length. My hair is dense, medium-coarse, and medium-porous. I've only ever tried NYM through samples but it's not for me - I personally didn't find it conditioning or hydrating enough. It's a long-term favourite for a lot of curlies, though!
PositiveCurl Talk
Not heavily scented; sticky when squeezed into hands but dries completely in the hair.
u/beagoodbearFine on topr/curlyhair, 2025Original comment
Not heavily scented. Is sticky when you squirt it into your hands, but completely dries in your hair. I’ve had the same experiences with Curl Activator and the Marc Anthony simply hates my hair
NegativeNaturals curl-defining conditioner
Leaves a film that survives multiple washes; curls look lifeless.
u/hhagz132Cr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
The NYM (natural) curl-defining conditioner leaves a weird layer of film on my hair strands after washing. It takes more than one wash for it to come out, and it still won’t unless I shampoo hard with a different brand. My 2C curls look lifeless, and barely curl at all. While they normally dry well. Switching back to coconut curls by ogx. Maybe, I got a bad bottle or something. Been trying over and over with the same results for a month now
PositiveCurl Talk
Much prefers it to Marc Anthony Strictly Curls on fine hair.
u/beagoodbearFine on topr/curlyhair, 2024Original comment
My hair is fine on the top and I MUCH prefer the Not Your Mother’s. The Marc Antony one seems to be too heavy for my hair and makes it clump together instead of forming defines curls.
PositiveCurl Talk Curl Cream
Uses it as a styler after Aussie coconut leave-in conditioner.
u/beagoodbearFine on topr/curlyhair, 2024Original comment
I use the Curl Talk Cream after the Aussie coconut leave-in conditioner
MentionCurl Talk
Tried both brands and found them fine.
u/Barfotron4000r/curlyhair, 2024Original comment
I have used both and they were fine. I use the strictly curls mousse now and I love it, but it is very strong hold
MentionCurl Talk Curl Cream
Owns it; no opinion given.
u/actualchristmastreer/curlyhair, 2024Original comment
I have Marc Anthony mousse, and from curl talk I have the gel and curl cream
NegativeCurl Talk
Loses curl definition and gets a lot of frizz. Hasn't tried Strictly Curls.
u/Individual-Count5336Fine curly hairr/curlyhair, 2024Original comment
These choices are so individual. Curl Talk products do not work well on my fine curly hair. I lose curl definition and get a lot of frizz. I haven't tried Strictly Curls.

PositiveCurl Talk oil
First oil usable all over, even at the scalp, without weighing hair down.
u/callmesmalllsr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
You can pry the curl talk gel from my cold, dead hands. The curl talk oil is the first oil I tried that I could put all over my hair, even by my scalp, without it getting weighed down, limp, and greasy. I also use the rice water and himalayan moringa conditioner (from the naturals line) which is great if you need to add some protein into your routine, and it smells delicious. I seriously think you can’t go wrong with their products, it just might take some trial and error to see what works for your hair.

PositiveBlue Sea Kale line
Used and loved for years; the matching foam was a holy grail until discontinued.
u/mermaidslp2B/C, low porosityr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I’ve been using the Blue Sea Kale line for years and love it. The foam that went with it was my holy grail, and then they discontinued it. I use the curl talk foam now which is decent, but not as good as the other foam. I suppose it’s meant to be used as a refresh vs regular foam so that’s why. I’m 2B/C, low porosity.
PositiveCurl Talk refresh foam
Less hold, but definitely not sticky.
u/mermaidslp2B/C, low porosityr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I use the curl talk refresh foam. Not as much hold as others since it’s supposed to be for refreshing curls, but definitely not sticky.
PositiveCurl Talk cream
Similar results to the gel.
u/Kathrynlenar/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I just recently switched to using NYM products as well and so far I’m really liking them. I feel like I get similar results using the gel or the cream. I did not like the mousse. It was fine, but for my routine, I much prefer Herbal Essences curl mousse. I had a bunch of old Aussie gel that I didn’t want to waste, so I mixed it with NYM gel and I think I like the combined product more than either gel on its own.
PositiveCurl Talk leave-in
Loves it.
u/beandadenergyr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I don’t know if they changed the formula in the Organic pink line, but last time I tried it there was so much buildup in my hair. I do love the Curl Talk leave-in, though.
PositiveCurl Talk styling line
Uses it almost exclusively for styling.
u/caffein8dnotopi8dFine but plentiful; 2C with some 3A; medium-high porosityr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I pretty much exclusively use the Curl Talk line for styling products. For shampoo I use the Mint & Coastal Sea Holly, and conditioner Gardenia & Mango Butter. Edit: my hair is fine (but a lot of it), 2C with a bit of 3A, medium-high porosity (I have highlights and the ends of my hair are high porosity but the rest is medium)

PositiveShampoo & conditioner
Shiny, springy hair; noticeably worse when forced to switch.
u/doesntmatter_muchr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I've been using the shampoo/conditioner and I absolutely love it. My hair gets shiny and springy. I've had to switch to different things when I can't find NYM and my hair is different immediately.
PositiveCurl Talk leave-in conditioner
Favourite brand; consistent results.
u/TotallyWitchinr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
They are my favorite, I use the leave in conditioner, mousse and gel. Surprisingly the gel holds but doesn’t feel or look like gel in the hair. I get the same result pretty much every time with this product, but I also have a strict routine, haha. I used to use their shampoo but I’ve switched to Saltair.
PositiveCurl Talk Bond Building shampoo & conditioner
Amazingly soft hair.
u/vintagetwinkier/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
My sister and I recently switched to using their Curl Talk bond building shampoo and conditioner, and my hair is amazingly soft. I also love their mousse.
PositiveColourful-bottle lines

3a/b (was 2c/3a), med porosity, fine w/ heavy density. Not a fan of acting in the white packaging Curl Talk range, love the stuff in the colorful bottles though.
PositiveCurl Talk
Best curls come from it plus half a pump of conditioner.
u/redquailerr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
My best curls come from NYM curl talk and then 1/2 a pump of my conditioner.
PositiveCurl Talk refreshing foam
Much lighter than the styling mousse; does not weigh hair down.
u/caffeinatedlackeyMixed curls and wavesr/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I love the curl talk refreshing foam! It's much lighter than the regular styling mousse so it doesn't weigh down my hair as much. I have mixed curls and waves that do best with lightweight products that allow them to bounce up.
PositiveDry shampoo

NegativeCurl Talk shampoo
Dense, barely lathered, no volume on fine hair.
u/yo_itsjoFine 2Ar/curlyhair, 2023Original comment
I have fine 2A hair, so may not help you specifically but I'll share. The Curl Talk shampoo I found really dense and it barely lathered in my hair, so no good volume. The gel seemed lighter hold than what I usually use (Aussie instant freeze), but I'd be willing to try it again. I'm interested in trying some of their other styling products eventually
NegativeCurl Talk
Not a fan of the white-packaged Curl Talk range.
