How is the Curl Score calculated?
We read 2 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. Sources and method
The verdict
Dense, softening and effective on thick hair, but too heavy for thinner hair, and changed since restocking for some.
The full verdict
Reviewers say it makes their hair so soft and does wonders for average or thick hair. It's dense, and one reviewer warns it's too heavy for thinner hair. Two long-time users say it has changed: one found it no longer moisturising after restocking, and another calls it a favourite whose formula has changed many times. There are only a handful of opinions so far.
- Best for
- Thick or coarse hair that needs a rich leave-in
- Skip it if
- Your hair is fine or thin

Design Essentials almond and avocado defining creme gel! I always use it when I want guaranteed good results. The Shea Moisture Jamaican Castor Oil leave-in also make my hair SO soft. I love it.

They changed the formula so many times for every good product they had… the manuka honey deep conditioner and the JBCO leave in were my favorites

I was tempted to try the whole line pictured here since I loved the gel already. But after restocking that one and also the JBCO leave in I wasnt feeling the same results anymore, for that I might agree with the information that you can read online about the new ownership and that formulas changed. Personally I noticed the products were not moisturizing anymore and curls were not getting good hold, the gel also left me with a lot of residue (even with small amounts) and that didnt happen before.

2b-3a low porosity i have a very tight budget and these were the best products i found and use religiously recommended for my fellow tight budget curl pals: syoss curl control mousse, not heavy and doesn't make my roots oily unlike some others i tried shea moisture jamaican black castor oil leave in conditioner, it's a dense but effective product so i wouldn't recommend for thinner hair but for average and thick hair it makes wonders inecto coconut conditioner, i have allergic reactions for SLS, SLES, etc so i avoid silicones since most of them can mainly be cleaned by those and this was the best drugstore conditioner i found without any silicones. it also makes my hair smell good and feel soft ziaja goat milk hair mask, this one is a game changer for me. i use it like every other hair mask/deep conditioner and everytime i use it my hair gets all the moisture it can possibly get (i have high porosity hair so it's usually harder for me to lock the moisture the hair needs and this works perfect for that)

I’m pretty budgeted on products, especially since I wash my hair every 2-3 days. My drugstore routine is Function of Beauty curly hair shampoo & conditioner, Shea moisture Jamaican castor oil leave in, and Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie, styled with a denman brush So curious about curlsmith but it’s $100/bottle on amazon 😳
