How is the Curl Score calculated?
We read 6 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. Sources and method
Mixed opinions
One cult classic. Mostly heavy.
The Curl Enhancing Smoothie keeps a loyal following, but most of the range is too heavy for fine or wavy hair.
The full verdict
The Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie is the product reviewers stand by: several have kept it in their routine for a decade while everything else changed. Beyond it, the most common verdict is that the range is too heavy, leaving fine, wavy and low-porosity hair flat, greasy or coated. A second theme runs through the comments: long-time users say the products changed after the 2017 Unilever buyout, with residue, less moisture and products that stopped working, and some feel the formulas moved away from the coily hair the brand was made for. Reviewers still praise the smells, the price and the kids' detanglers.
- More promising for
- Thick, coarse or coily hair that likes rich products, children's detangling, and the Smoothie as a leave-in.
- Think twice if
- Your hair is fine, wavy or low porosity, or you loved the old formulas and expect them unchanged.

That smoothie jar is the one product from them I’ll actually stand by, the shampoo and conditioner are way too heavy for my hair though. Tried the coconut line a few years back and it just sat on top like a film, never really rinsing out clean. My curls looked decent for like two hours then fell completely flat by lunchtime. The smoothie as a single styler on soaking wet hair actually gave me decent definition, just had to use a tiny amount or it’d get greasy fast. These days I stick to lighter stuff but I get why people with thicker or coarser hair swear by it

I was tempted to try the whole line pictured here since I loved the gel already. But after restocking that one and also the JBCO leave in I wasnt feeling the same results anymore, for that I might agree with the information that you can read online about the new ownership and that formulas changed. Personally I noticed the products were not moisturizing anymore and curls were not getting good hold, the gel also left me with a lot of residue (even with small amounts) and that didnt happen before.

I also have fine curly hair and I can’t use any of it. It’s too heavy for me. However, they have a leave in that’s amazing for detangling. My daughter has thicker curly hair and when she was little she’d get the worst knots at the base of her neck. This is the only thing that worked.

I have fine 2c/3a curls and a lot of this line is too heavy for me but I am in love with their miracle styler spray in leave in treatment. The pump sucks so I have to spray my hands and rake it in but it leaves my hair so soft and hydrated. Haven’t found a leave in that works better. I also love their mousse, it is a good last step and defines my curls without weighing them down. Personally onlycurls worked really well for me and I love it! But I only buy it when it's on offer/I haven't really found a set brand or set that works best. My hair didn't like Noughty, defo loves Shea moisture but it's a bit spenny too! It's trial and error really. Only curls do a sample set which is good though and you'd get a few washes to see how your hair got on with!

I got the sample pack (shampoo, condish, gel, cream) when I bought their towel and bonnets, I did think it was nice products that wasn't too heavy (fine haired low porosity here), the megahold gel didn't exist then, so while I found the enhanced gel nice to apply I thought it was too soft hold. Overall I simply can't justify their price. I use noughty for most, like some as i am, shea moisture, umberto and camille, and still am trying to find my fav gel or mousse. All of these are cheaper than OC. If OC was closer to these in price I would still get them.

Type: Dense 2C/3A South Asian hair, almost down to my hip, medium porosity. Product: Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Masque Routine: soul flower rosemary oil the night before a wash - Selsun on my scalp/Moxie for the lengths - SM Masque as conditioner, partially rinsed out - Curlsmith in-shower style fixer So I use this as a leave-in conditioner. The rest of the line is fine (shampoo and actual leave-in), but I got tired of having multiple products (I’ve tried 50+ products over the years). The masque is obviously super thick, but a tiny bit through my hair, and rinsed out about 50% while squishing works for me. Followed by the Curlsmith. I tried this out because I honestly can’t keep up with a hugely long routine in my 30s, and I travel a lot - between skin, body, and haircare I just couldn’t sustain carrying 20+ products. This is my only conditioner, and it works GREAT.

I changed over to Pacifica for a while, but now I’m using some of the more expensive products and notice a huge difference in terms of product weight and my hair being soft/shiny (Aveda mostly). The SM curl milk was the first curly product I really used and it was great. Then it seemed they changed the formula several years back when unilever bought SM in 2017, since then I have tried bunch of other brands—e.g., Mielle, Aunt Jackie’s, Miss Jessie’s, Chi, it’s a 10, and others—and I found each had their drawbacks. I recently returned to SM coco hibiscus line (the smoothie in particular) and it works better, than any of the other brands I tried in the interim, despite the reformulation not being as great as the OG.

I was a ride or die for their deep conditioners, I had both their black castor oil one (that smells like playdoh) and their manuka honey one, the castor oil one started doing nothing for my hair eventually so I dropped it but I can defo vouch for their manuka honey deep conditioner. Super good for getting moisture into the hair. Defo beginner friendly too. I used to have 3b-3c curls now I’m more of a 2c.

I also have five 2c/2b hair and the Shea Moisture Daily Hydration Conditioner has been my go-to for years. I used to get it from Costco and then they stopped carrying it. But now BJ’s carries it so I have someone I know get it from there. Much more affordable than a lot of other curly products. But I can’t use the curl specific line either.

The curl and moisture lines caused protein overload, brittleness and breakage, both times I tried the brand, 5 years apart.

This line and the moisture line ruined my hair. 3c fine curls. Moved me in to protein overload and made my hair brittle with lots breaking off. I have tried this brand twice, 5 years apart, and it occurred both times. Never again. Now I know.

My hands down fav is when I mix Shea moisture coco and hibiscus curling soufflé with the smooth and use that in my hair. I rarely shampoo and I just alternate a few conditioners like the SM coco/hibiscus and the jbco one.

I love that whole line so so much! My hair is 3a and coarse/medium textured, my son is 1c/2a wavy straight medium textured and we both adore their shampoo and conditioner, it’s not too heavy but still actually rich enough. I need more protein and frizz control than he does, so I pre poo with their manuka honey and yogurt conditioner (not the masque unless I’m really needing extra protein, it’s pretty full on) and he alternates between that and the manuka honey and marufa masque depending on his protein/moisture balance. For leave in, he uses the marufa oil leave in conditioner (this one is pretty heavy so go light with it at first if you’re trying it out) and I usually go straight for the coconut and hibiscus curl smoothie, or sometimes the honey and yogurt leave in (ultra light protein) and then the curl smoothie on top but occasionally I use the entire marufa oil line and skip the smoothie if I’ve got a protein imbalance. We both have super shiny, bouncy, noticeably healthy looking hair, mine is past mid back and his is just past shoulder length, I recommend their stuff so highly to anyone who doesn’t have fine, easily weighed down hair since I can imagine a lot of the products I really like might be a bit much for that crowd.

I have the shampoo, conditioner and curl creme. They've been very good, no complaints. I've got some other things to try so won't be going straight back, they're expensive but i found them effective and consistent. I paired the curl creme with some Shea moisture hibiscus mousse to get a bit more oil in. Edit. Male aged 46, wild curls and coils, very thick, shoulder length.

I recall the outrage when the brand was bought out: a successful Black-owned business made for Black hair had its formulations changed to target whiter demographics.

I don’t think I’ve ever used them. I remember when they were bought out, though, and there was a lot of outrage because it was a really successful black-owned business with products made specifically for black hair, and then the new owners changed formulations to target whiter demographics.

Fine or wavy hair that is easily weighed down
Why Most reviewers with fine or wavy hair say the range is too heavy.
But too heavy for some.
The exceptions are small and specific: one reviewer applies a little Smoothie before wringing out so it doesn't weigh their hair down, another uses it as a single styler in a small amount, and a reviewer with fine 2C/3A curls loves the Frizz-Free Curl Mousse as a last step.
Probably skip Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Leave-In Conditioner
Thick, coarse or coily hair
Why This is who the brand suits.
But too heavy for thinner hair.
Reviewers say the JBCO leave-in does wonders for average or thick hair, a reviewer with very thick 4c hair says it works pretty well, and one with coarse corkscrew curls loves the whole set. Some long-time users with coily and high-porosity hair feel the newer formulas give less moisture than the old ones.
Also consider Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Detangling children's curls
The comments don't point clearly to one SheaMoisture product for this.
Why Parents are some of the warmest reviewers.
The leave-in is the only thing that worked on one daughter's worst knots, and another calls the kids' detangler the best on the market. A parent found the rest of the range too heavy for their kids' hair.
Based on what commenters with similar hair reported. Hair varies.
