How is the Curl Score calculated?
We read 2 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. The verdict
A decade-long staple for many, giving shine and bounce, though too heavy for some.
The full verdict
Reviewers describe it as the one product that has stayed in their routine while they swapped every other step, and one would be lost if it were discontinued. It's used as a leave-in for extra moisture, shine and bounce, or alone as a single styler on soaking wet hair. Fine-haired fans use only a little, applied before wringing out. Two reviewers hated it: way too heavy, unpleasant to apply, and clinging to only parts of the hair.
- Best for
- A moisturising leave-in or one-step styler on medium to thick curls
- Skip it if
- Your hair is fine and weighed down by butters

Way too heavy.
OP; high porosity (stated in another comment)

I've swapped my leave-in, co-wash and clarifying shampoo over time, but the curl smoothie has stayed in my routine throughout.
- u/meanlaborerr/curlyhair, 2026
The one product I stand by: decent definition as a single styler on soaking wet hair, but only a small amount.
Finds most of the range too heavy; now sticks to lighter products

Same. I have changed my leave in conditioner a few times, my co wash and clarifying shampoo has changed a few times, but I still have the curl smoothie as part of my hair routine through it all.

That smoothie jar is the one product from them I’ll actually stand by, the shampoo and conditioner are way too heavy for my hair though. Tried the coconut line a few years back and it just sat on top like a film, never really rinsing out clean. My curls looked decent for like two hours then fell completely flat by lunchtime. The smoothie as a single styler on soaking wet hair actually gave me decent definition, just had to use a tiny amount or it’d get greasy fast. These days I stick to lighter stuff but I get why people with thicker or coarser hair swear by it

Same here. Actually I have no idea what I’d do. Its the only product that I use. I’d have to go back to experimenting with products but none work as well for me as this stuff.

My holy grail: I swap my leave-in, gel or oil, but never the smoothie.

The Smoothie is my holy grail. I may change my leave in, gel or oil, but NEVER the smoothie.

I returned to the coco hibiscus line (especially the smoothie), and it works better for me than Mielle, Aunt Jackie's, Miss Jessie's and others.

The SM curl milk was the first curly product I really used and it was great. Then it seemed they changed the formula several years back when unilever bought SM in 2017, since then I have tried bunch of other brands—e.g., Mielle, Aunt Jackie’s, Miss Jessie’s, Chi, it’s a 10, and others—and I found each had their drawbacks. I recently returned to SM coco hibiscus line (the smoothie in particular) and it works better, than any of the other brands I tried in the interim, despite the reformulation not being as great as the OG.

I hate the smoothie yall! It is too heavy, not pleasant to apply and clings to parts of my hair only. One of the few products I never Rebe tried to finish.
PositiveReddit comment
My usual leave-in; great shine and bounce.

I love that whole line so so much! My hair is 3a and coarse/medium textured, my son is 1c/2a wavy straight medium textured and we both adore their shampoo and conditioner, it’s not too heavy but still actually rich enough. I need more protein and frizz control than he does, so I pre poo with their manuka honey and yogurt conditioner (not the masque unless I’m really needing extra protein, it’s pretty full on) and he alternates between that and the manuka honey and marufa masque depending on his protein/moisture balance. For leave in, he uses the marufa oil leave in conditioner (this one is pretty heavy so go light with it at first if you’re trying it out) and I usually go straight for the coconut and hibiscus curl smoothie, or sometimes the honey and yogurt leave in (ultra light protein) and then the curl smoothie on top but occasionally I use the entire marufa oil line and skip the smoothie if I’ve got a protein imbalance. We both have super shiny, bouncy, noticeably healthy looking hair, mine is past mid back and his is just past shoulder length, I recommend their stuff so highly to anyone who doesn’t have fine, easily weighed down hair since I can imagine a lot of the products I really like might be a bit much for that crowd.

For extra moisture. Tip for fine hair: apply a little before wringing out so it doesn't weigh your hair down.

As I am coconut co wash. Next of us leave in conditioner spray. And when I need extra moisture. I use Shea moisture coconut hibiscus hair smoothie. For people with fine don’t wrong out hair when you get out of the shower. Put a small amount of smoothie on hands and work through. Then wring out excess water. It gets the smoothie in. But not so much it weighs it down

I’m pretty budgeted on products, especially since I wash my hair every 2-3 days. My drugstore routine is Function of Beauty curly hair shampoo & conditioner, Shea moisture Jamaican castor oil leave in, and Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie, styled with a denman brush So curious about curlsmith but it’s $100/bottle on amazon 😳
