Only Curls

A British curl brand with a salon following and a premium price. We collated what curly-haired reviewers say about it, so you can tell whether it will suit your hair before you buy.

The Curly Hair Society verdict

Only Curls: is it worth it?

Mixed reviews

Worth considering for thick, dry curls. Less convincing for fine hair.

Reviewers praise the definition and frizz control, but the range divides opinion on fragrance, heaviness and price. Fans call it a game changer; critics found cheaper products did the same job.

More promising for

Thick, dry or coarse curls that need moisture, slip and definition.

Think twice if

Your strands are fine and easily weighed down, you are sensitive to fragrance, or you are on a tight budget.

Fine hair that is easily weighed down

Start with the mousse, the one product fine-haired reviewers keep using. The curl creme was the most common source of “heavy” and “greasy by day two”.

Real Reviewer Experiences

A representative mix, good and bad

  1. PositiveWhole range

Game-changer; frizz literally non-existent, curls defined and hydrated. Always goes back to OC after trying other brands; just wish it was cheaper.

I use Only Curls when I embrace the natural curls and find their products to be a game-changer for me. My frizz is literally non-existent and it leaves my curls looking defined and hydrated. It is expensive so try the smaller trial packs before buying the full sized sets. They've recently released a Berry scent and I find smells lush - not too overpowering but a mild, fruity scent. I've tried numerous other curly hair brands and always end up going back to OC. Just wish it was a little cheaper 😆

  2. PositiveShampoo & Conditioner

Expensive but the only shampoo and conditioner that has ever worked for them; conditioner has loads of slip, shampoo does not strip or leave hair greasy, and waves stay defined, not weighed down.

unfortunately, yes. expensive but it's the ONLY shampoo and conditioner that has ever worked for my thick dry 2c hair. the conditioner has loads of slip and the shampoo doesn't make my hair feel stripped or greasy, and my waves are defined and not weighed down after

  3. NegativeWhole range

All too heavy for me; expensive for what you get. Would rather try Curlsmith or similar.

u/This_lousy_usernameFine wavy hair with some ringletsr/CurlyHairUK, 2022Original comment

    Read the full comment

I have fine wavy hair with some ringlets. It's easily weighed down. Only Curls is all too heavy for me. The curl cream made my hair so flat/greasy after Day 1, and I didn't find it that moisterising. I used to use the gel a lot, but it wasn't a strong enough hold (even though my hair doesn't need a lot), and it didn't work great on refresh days. I switched to a £3.50 gel that works better for me. I think it's expensive for what you get. For that money I would rather try Curlsmith or similar.

  1. MixedStarter Kit

Got the sample pack (shampoo, conditioner, gel, cream) with a towel and bonnet; nice, not-too-heavy products but cannot justify the price. Would still buy if it were closer to Noughty, Shea Moisture and Umberto Giannini pricing.

    u/CommonpixelsFine hair, low porosityr/CurlyHairUK, 2026Original comment

    Read the full comment

I got the sample pack (shampoo, condish, gel, cream) when I bought their towel and bonnets, I did think it was nice products that wasn't too heavy (fine haired low porosity here), the megahold gel didn't exist then, so while I found the enhanced gel nice to apply I thought it was too soft hold. Overall I simply can't justify their price. I use noughty for most, like some as i am, shea moisture, umberto and camille, and still am trying to find my fav gel or mousse. All of these are cheaper than OC. If OC was closer to these in price I would still get them.

  2. NegativeWhole range

Says you can get the same results with far cheaper products; after spending a lot, found technique matters more than the products.

You can absolutely get the same results with far cheaper products. After spending a lot of money, I found it's much more about finding a technique that works for my hair.

  3. PositiveWhole range

Worked really well and they love it; only buys on offer and has not settled on a favourite set. Notes the sample set gives a few washes to test.

Personally onlycurls worked really well for me and I love it! But I only buy it when it's on offer/I haven't really found a set brand or set that works best. My hair didn't like Noughty, defo loves Shea moisture but it's a bit spenny too! It's trial and error really. Only curls do a sample set which is good though and you'd get a few washes to see how your hair got on with!

  6. MixedFragrance-free range

It's good for my hair but I'm annoyed at how much it costs and I'm still trying to find an alternative. I'm allergic to a lot of fragrances so I'm using the fragrance free range which gives it more value to me.

  7. NegativeWhole range

Not worth it for them, though curl preferences vary a lot; suggests the sample pack as a low-risk trial (one of few brands still offering them).

    u/ellsbells27r/CurlyHairUK, 2026Original comment

    Read the full comment

For me, no. But the thing with curls is that everyone has their own perefernces, and there are so many factors in what works for us all and what doesn't. I would suggest getting their little sample pack and giving it a go, they're one of few brands that offer them still!

  8. NegativeWhole range

Waste of money for them; prefers Davines Curl range and especially Oribe (very expensive). Says it depends on your curls.

u/oscarmilo70Has tried many mid to high priced curl rangesr/CurlyHairUK, 2026Original comment

    Read the full comment

Only Curls was a waste of money for me... I've been around the houses trying a lot of mid to high priced curl ranges, the ones that deliver for me anyhow tend to me the more expensive ones: Davines Curl range and the best has been Oribe products for me, which are very £££. It depends really on what your curls are like.. everyone has success with different products.

  9. NegativeWhole range

Overpriced and not very effective; too many stages of products.

u/AccomplishedDust8575Used it when first transitioning to curly hairr/CurlyHairUK, 2026Original comment

No, I used it when I first changed to having my hair curly. It's overpriced and not very effective in my opinion. There was too many 'stages' of products too.

  10. NegativeWhole range

Did not get along with it and hated the smell. Suggests spending more on styling products than on shampoo.

u/twoexfortyfiveSays strand thickness and water hardness are key factorsr/CurlyHairUK, 2026Original comment

    Read the full comment

I didn't get along with Only Curls, I hated the smell as well! What is the texture of your hair? Not the curl pattern, that doesn't matter, but how thick are the strands? This will affect the kind of products that will work best for you. Plus I find water hardness is key if you want to really dig into what is affecting your hair. It doesn't always mean spending loads! I find styling products are worth spending a bit more on than shampoo as well.

  11. NegativeWhole range

Not for them at all, probably due to the coconut content.

    u/EyeSpy1359Probably coconut-sensitiver/CurlyHairUK, 2026Original comment

    Read the full comment

Not for me at all, probably due to the coconut content. Instead, I get good results using the following: Cowash: Aldi (or Sainsbury's)apple conditioner Condition: With above or Ultimate Blends rice water infusion conditioner Leave in: Noughty intensive care Curl cream: No longer used but Noughty Wave Hello curl taming cream Mousse: Shockwaves volume mousse (the green one) Gel: Eco gel, either olive oil or super protein

  12. NegativeWhole range

Not great for their hair; Curlsmith (strong hold) worked better and Umberto Giannini gave a very similar result for less and is easier to find.

    u/Key-Bar-3460r/CurlyHairUK, 2026Original comment

For me Only Curls wasn't great for my hair. I did try Curlsmith - one of the other pricier ones - and that did work well for me (went for strong hold). But I'm a fan of Umberto Giannini - cheaper and achieved a very similar result and a lot easier to find.

  13. NegativeWhole range

I tried their products (was not blown away by it) so now only purchase the curling gel when they have offers on, as it provides a good finish. I used to use Umberto Gianni (used it for about 12 years) but they changed the ingredients and it stopped being effective. I'm currently using Aussie curl shampoo, conditioner and curl cream. Then finish with Only Curls gel.

Has anyone experienced an itchy scalp when using Only curls? I generally wash my hair in the shower and it causes other areas downstairs to itch! Although it really curls my hair i think I'm having a reaction to it has anyone else had this reaction and what alternatives do people recommend?

I use the shampoo, conditioner, cream and gel. They've drastically reduced frizz and made my hair way less greasy. However, these are the first products I've ever used that are designed specifically for curly hair, so I don't have anything to compare them to. I would guess they are probably overpriced but I really like that they supply unscented versions.

  24. PositiveCleansing Co-Wash

First dedicated co-wash I've tried so nothing to compare to, but hair felt lovely and clean. Main one I might buy again, but would try cheaper options first.

u/jolie_jSalon used OC on them; failed to match salon results at homer/CurlyHairUK, 2022Original comment

    Read the full comment

I went to a curly specialist hairdresser and they used Only Curls products on me. My hair came out looking the best it's ever looked, so I rushed to buy the products. I totally failed at matching the salon results no matter how hard I tried and I've since stopped using most of the products as I found cheaper versions give me the same results. * Cleansing co-wash - This was the first dedicated co-wash I've tried so I don't have anything to compare it to, but my hear did feel lovely and clean after using it - this is the main one that I might consider buying again, but I'd want to try some cheaper options first * All Curl Conditioner - Fine but probably not worth paying extra for.. the 75p Tesco conditioner probably does the same job * Exfoliating scalp scrub - I like it as a bit of a "luxurious" wash - I don't use it every time but it feels good to remove build up with it. It's very tricky to work into my hair though, especially before it's been detangled * Hydrating curl cream - Not sure I saw the advantage of this - I suspect comparable products from Boots do the same job * Enhancing curl gel - I didn't find this gel strong enough. It was my first time using gel so I wasn't sure if it was me doing something wrong or the gel, but I agree with some reviews I've seen that it's not a strong gel. I have not tried the Mega Hold Curl Gel * Microfibre towel - Personally I don't see the advantage over using a regular towel or a tshirt.

I've tried all the products except for the curl cream. The foam is the only thing I actually use and it's pretty good. I have really fine hair and the rest of the stuff is just a bit too heavy for me to use on a regular basis. I also find the fragrance cloying so if I buy anything else from them, it'll definitely be from the fragrance-free line. I'm a fan of the pillowcases and scrunchies though!
