A leave-in conditioner does not define curls, hold them or give them shine. It does something less visible and more useful: it keeps moisture in the strand between one wash and the next, and it gives every product applied after it a smoother surface to work on. Gel over a good leave-in dries soft. Gel over bare hair often dries stiff and frizzy.

The difficulty is weight. A leave-in stays on your hair for days, so the wrong one shows. Too rich and waves hang limp; too thin and coils are dry by the afternoon.

What we looked for

  • Slip, because a leave-in is also your last chance to detangle.
  • Weight matched to the pattern. Each pick states who it is for.
  • Good manners under other products. Some leave-ins turn into white flakes when gel goes on top. These are known to layer well.

Porosity matters as much as pattern here. Low porosity hair generally wants the lighter options whatever its curl type.

How to apply a leave-in

Apply to soaking wet hair straight after rinsing out your conditioner, before any other styler. Use a small amount, rake it through with your fingers from the ends upward, and add more only where your hair still feels rough. Then apply your gel or mousse over the top.
