How is the Curl Score calculated?
We read 6 public Reddit discussions and logged each person's opinion of each product as positive, mixed or negative, and members add theirs when they review a product here. The Curl Score puts those on a scale of 1 to 5: every opinion positive would be 5, every one negative 1, and an even split 3, with a mixed opinion counting as half positive. Passing mentions aren't opinions, so they don't count, and each person counts once per product. Every brand is scored the same way, but these are comments, not verified purchases or a survey. Sources and method
Mostly positive
Cult classics. Rising prices.
Knot Today is one of the best-loved leave-ins we track; the Curling Custard is a long-time favourite that divides more.
The full verdict
Reviewers are fiercely loyal: many have used the line for 10, 15 or 20 years and call it holy grail. Knot Today, a light leave-in some use as a rinse-out, has almost no detractors and is praised for its slip, detangling and for not weighing fine hair down. The Curling Custard is loved for clumpy, shiny, hydrated curls, but it's thick, needs diffusing, and gave halo frizz or no hold in humidity to some, and a few say it flakes since a possible formula change. The recurring complaint, across the range, is price: several reviewers have stopped buying, and it's hard to find outside the US.
- More promising for
- Fine or tangle-prone curls that need slip without weight, and anyone who wants a short, simple ingredient list.
- Think twice if
- You live somewhere humid and need firm hold, your hair is fine and wavy, or you're sensitive to aloe vera or scent.

I can't live without it. The price has crept up, but a bottle lasts months. Soft, shiny, detangled and frizz-free; it's oil-free and weightless, so there's no buildup, and the ingredient list is short.
Coarse; thick; wiry; low porosity; 3B
- u/LadyB5091r/curlyhair, 2026
Too much moisture: major halo frizz, and my curls didn't last longer than a couple of hours.
- u/mulberrycedarr/curlyhair, 2026
The only conditioner that has ever detangled my fine curly hair. It saves time and breakage, and I'd be stuck if it were discontinued.
Fine curly hair
- u/hellomidnightautumnr/curlyhair, 2026
My holy grail gel. I hate the price, but I can't do without it and nothing cheaper compares. I go through a tub every 1-2 months, and it must be diffused on my very fine hair.
3A/B/C; super fine hair
- u/RomanoCheesedr/curlyhair, 2026
It used to be my holy grail, but my last two tubs turned white and flaked off badly once dry. I suspect the formula changed, and I've stopped buying it.
- u/Loose-Chemical-4982r/curlyhair, 2026
The best clarifying and chelating shampoo: gentle, and it doesn't dry my hair out, but strips off the gunk.
3A/B; low porosity; fine; dense; silver and black hair

I love it, but $23 is too much. My routine: As I Am cowash or a weekly clarifying shampoo, Cantu curl activator cream, mousse at the roots, a gloss of Kinky Curly gel, scrunch with microfibre, diffuse, and break the cast with curl oil.

Detailed routine: Cowash (As I Am) or once weekly clarifying shampoo. Conditioner (usually a curly one from Marshals or TJ Maxx) Soaking wet hair add: Cantu curl activator cream everywhere but roots. Moose on the roots for lift. Then gloss over Kinky Curly gel. Let the hair absorb a few minutes. Gentle scrunch with microfiber towel. Then diffuse or air dry. Break cast with curl oil.

I loved it, but the price went from $25 on sale (regularly $34 CAD) to $50; it was my first product ever. I'm saving the last pot for special occasions.

Loved this stuff but it went from $25 on sale in Canada (regularly $34) to now $50. [and] I saved a little bit of my last pot to use for special occasions so that my hair can be a 10/10 when it matters and a 9/10 the rest of the time haha.

I'm very late to this thread, but I buy it in bulk from Walgreens.com when they have a sale. Right now, the Kinky Curly Curling Custard is $19.99 at Walgreens compared to $22.99 at Target. Plus, Walgreens is having a 20% off $35 or more sale.

I just bought their curl gelee and curl gloss to try. My curls barely curl with these and fall out by the end of the day, plus no volume. Curl Gloss works ok as a second day refresh without rewetting. I do love the smell though. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if the products are just too moisturizing, but I will absolutely will not be repurchasing. Kinky Curly works MUCH better for my hair, even if I have to pay the extra drying time penalty for it.

In Australia it's at least $50 ($35 USD) but usually more like $60 ($42 USD) for the 8oz, and then I often have to pay for postage on top, even when buying several at once. I've never found anything equally good here that's actually cheaper, but the price is RIDICULOUS. [Note: product inferred from post]

Fine hair that is easily weighed down
Why Knot Today is the safe pick: several reviewers with fine, low-porosity hair call it the only leave-in that doesn't weigh their hair down, and the only conditioner that has ever detangled it.
But a scent some can't stand.
The Custard is riskier. Reviewers with fine curls love it in small amounts, but others with thin or type 2 hair found it too thick and heavy.
Probably skip Curling Custard
Hair that tangles and breaks easily
Why This is what Knot Today is known for.
But a scent some can't stand.
Reviewers describe elite slip that works wonders with a wet brush, saves breakage, and detangles a daughter's tricky knots. One reviewer found it too slippery as a rinse-out, and another needs to dilute it.
Hold in heat and humidity
The comments don't point clearly to one Kinky-Curly product for this.
Why The Custard's moisture is a mixed blessing.
One reviewer prefers it for holding through humidity, but others got major halo frizz and curls that lasted a couple of hours, or found it doesn't work in high humidity. A reviewer in ultra-high humidity layers it under a hard-hold gel.
Probably skip Curling Custard
Not sure where to start
Why Start with Knot Today, the most-reviewed product and the one with almost no complaints beyond its scent.
But a scent some can't stand.
If you want hold, the Custard is the brand's styler: use very little, diffuse rather than air-dry, and know that a few reviewers say recent tubs flake.
Also consider Curling Custard
Based on what commenters with similar hair reported. Hair varies.
Better alternatives
What some of the same reviewers switched to, and why. A single mention is a lead, not a verdict.
For a cheaper styler
The Doux Honey Setting Foam
A reviewer who used the Custard for a decade but was priced out now uses The Doux's honey product instead, though they still miss it.

For a drugstore styler
Not Your Mother's Curl Talk range
